2004 fx cruiser HO top speed 52mph

I have a 2004 fx cruiser ho 160 hp. It is currently getting a top speed of 52 mph, and i am led to believe it should be more like 65 mph or more. Seems as though once i reach 3/4 throttle, the ski is at full speed and do not accelerate the remainder of the throttle. The impeller looks good, but i would like to know what the clearance to the wear ring should be. Other than excessive clearance, what else could be the cause. Rpm goes up to around 9000. I am not the origional owner, i recently purchased the ski.

If your ski is stock, they do 58-60 mph.. The speedos on these are not accurate, try to Gps it. Your Rpms are down, you should be @ 10,000 - 10,200 rpms..Unles your rach is also off. I forget the exact clearance, but it is tight, check prop, pump housing and I would also check the air filter for oil, check your oil level to see if it is over filled and I would check the spark plugs for sure.

I did check the speed out with a gps and the 52 mph is accurate. A tight clearance are we talking like 0.007 per side (0.014 inch total). how would i know if the prop is stock or not. Another question, if i were to pull the wear ring and machine a new one, is there any alignment tricks to be aware of or does the assembly bolt right back in the correct position.

I have a very similar problem with my 09 VX. I got it second hand with 70hours on it and when I got it I measured top speed with GPS and got 52 one way and 53 the other (to compensate for tide) and that is what it should be
and now I just can not get near 50mph maybe 46-48. Ski now has 110hours I have looked at the pump, intake great, new oil and installed new spark plugs and still no change. my friends got new 2008 leftover VX and it is faster for now.
One thing that I have kind of noticed that the ski seems to be litlle bit more slugish of the line then it used to be as if I had a big passenger on back.
any help or suggestions will be appreciated. I will go and check my air filter now and report back

That sounds a little tight if I'm not mistaken, again I don't remember the clearence spec.someone will chime in with it..You would have to look with a flash light or pull it,most aftermarket props are marked.. that could be your problem too, after market prop on a stock ski could cost you on these skis, but not that much. You don't machine them, you replace them with stock or after market parts and it should go right in. I woud replace plugs and take the air filter out and go for a ride and see if that helps.

"Rpm goes up to around 9000" If this is the case, I would suggest you get this sorted BEFORE spending any money on a new impeller and housing.

Sounds like you were over filled on oil..Clean it up,bring it down to proper level and buy a new air filter,at dealer, ebay or aftermarket..I would put the sponsons back on ,not sure, but I'm sure you could lose control of your ski and get hurt.

Did you find the problem? If so what was it?
