2011 jeep grand cherokee transmission fluid level check

Check the fluid level while the transmission is at normal operating temperature. This occurs after at least 15 miles (25 km) of driving. At normal operating temperature the fluid cannot be held comfortably between the fingertips.

To check the fluid level properly, the following procedure must be used: 1. Operate the engine at idle speed and normal operating temperature.

2. The vehicle must be on level ground.

3. Fully apply the parking brake, and press the brake pedal.

4. Place the shift lever momentarily in each gear position ending with the shift lever in PARK.

5. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean and reinsert it until seated.

6. Remove the dipstick again, and note the fluid level on both sides. The fluid level should be between the “HOT” (upper) reference holes on the dipstick at normal operating temperature. The fluid level is only valid if there is a solid coating of oil on both sides of the dipstick. If the fluid is low, add as required into the dipstick tube. Do not overfill. After adding any quantity of oil through the oil fill tube, wait a minimum of two minutes for the oil to fully drain into the transmission before rechecking the fluid level.

NOTE: If it is necessary to check the transmission below the operating temperature, the fluid level should be between the two “COLD” (lower) holes on the dipstick with the fluid at approximately 70°F (21°C) (room temperature).

If the fluid level is correctly established at room temperature, it should be between the “HOT” (upper) reference holes when the transmission reaches 180°F (82°C). Remember it is best to check the level at the normal operating temperature.

CAUTION!
Be aware that if the fluid temperature is below 50°F (10°C) it may not register on the dipstick. Do not add fluid until the temperature is elevated enough to produce an accurate reading.

7. Check for leaks. Release parking brake.

To prevent dirt and water from entering the transmission after checking or replenishing fluid, make certain that the dipstick cap is properly reseated. It is normal for the dipstick cap to spring back slightly from its fully seated position, as long as its seal remains engaged in the dipstick tube.

Trying to check tranny fluid in my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lardeo 4x4 AWD version with the 3.6 Penstar engine & have ~59,000 miles. Tranny shifts fine & only do light towing with it. I was shocked to see that there is no dipstick & after much reading have gotten "smart" about how one goes about checking the fluid level (ie: get a long Dorman 917-327 dipstick & measure both temp of tranny fluid & dipstick readings against chart for NAGI WK transmissions). So, my concern is if I go & buy a long dipstick, how do I measure the transmission temp!!. Internet talks about scan tool or making some type of thermocouple to stick down the tranny dipstick.
So I noticed on the dash display scrolling to the vehicle engine specifics, there is a display for transmission temp!! Can I use that reading with the long dipstick & get accurate fill levels If not, any other ideas??

1st Update: I have been monitoring the transmission temp & after about 20 minutes of driving stabilizes out at 167-168 f
2nd Update: I recently completed the transmission fluid & filter change using the dash display for the transmission temp and was able to remotely (probe down the dipstick tube) confirm the actual temp of the fluid as being the same as that displayed on the dash. The Dorman 917-327 dipstick worked great.

Our research indicates that your vehicle does not have a transmission fluid dipstick. These types of transmissions are designed to be maintenance free. In order to check the transmission fluid, your vehicle likely has check valve on the bottom of the transmission on the bottom of your car. Your car must be level when the fluid is checked and we therefore recommend having a mechanic with a hydraulic lift or underground bay check your transmission fluid. Any fluid leaks for this type of transmission should be treated by a mechanic.

How do you check transmission fluid in a Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Bring the vehicle up to operating temperature and check fluid level with engine idling. Push dipstick into transmission fill tube until it bottoms out against the transmission pan and pull out, read fluid level. NOTE: The dipstick will protrude from fill tube when installed.

How do you check transmission fluid on a Jeep Grand Cherokee without dipstick?

If the vehicle does not have a dipstick, the transmission fluid must be checked at the transmission. This requires lifting the car on four jack stands; it must be level to check the fluid. There will be a fill plug on the side of the transmission case. This is not the drain plug located at the bottom of the sump.

How do you check the transmission fluid on a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Remove the dipstick, being careful not to spill or drip any fluid. Wipe off the dipstick with a clean rag, just as you would do when checking the engine oil. Reinsert the dipstick, then remove the dipstick again to check the fluid level. If you need to top it off, be sure to use the recommended transmission fluid.
