1.0 out of 5 starsDON'T BUY THE AZO TEST STRIPS-- I got TWO false positive readings!

Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 10, 2017

I was having symptoms of a UTI (urinary tract infection). I wasn't able to see my doctor right away and I ordered these AZO Test Strips. The box contained 3 test strips. I tested myself on Sunday and the test turned a reddish color which led me to believe i had leukocytes indicating to me that I had an infection. On wednesday, I had an appointment with my doctor and I decided to test again with another of the 3 test strips. Again, the test turned a reddish color. I put this test strip in a plastic bag and brought it with me to the doctor's office. As soon as I told my doctor about the result of the home test strip, he gave me a sample jar and asked me to provide a urine sample. My doctor was able to test the sample right there at the office and we got the results within 10 minutes. The test came back negative. He told me he would send the sample out to the culture lab to ensure there was no infection growing. That came back negative as well. I did the test on two different days and apparenty got 'false positives' on both tries. There will be no more home-tests for me; this home UTI test does not work accurately.

Answer:

Our test strips have a 93% accuracy rate. In most cases, there's not a high chance of getting a false positive. However, it's important to read the test strip exactly at the 2 minute mark for the leukocytes, as the reading will slowly darken over time and become inaccurate.

Answer:

That very likely means you have a UTI. The important thing to keep in mind is if it was that color when you read it at 2 minutes, because past two minutes, 10 minutes and upwards, will usually be inaccurate.

Answer:

Yes. They are different types of readings but if either one is positive it shows signs that it's possible that you have a UTI. Be sure you are reading it at the right time, but other than that, we would recommend speaking to a doctor.

Answer:

No, they do not. We just recommend attempting to read them as close to the 1 minute mark and 2 minute mark as possible.

Answer:

We do not recommend it. For most accurate results, we recommend urinating on the strip itself.

Answer:

The results should be in a uniform color. If your result was spotty, most likely the urine sample test was contaminated. We recommend testing again, making sure the sample is clean and free of soap, vaginal discharge, menses or some other contaminant.

Answer:

Yes it can. The AZO pain relief med contains phenazopyridine, which contains an organic dye. This can interfere with the ability to read colorimetric test strips like the AZO test strips. So you want to make sure the pain relief medicine is out of your system prior to testing.

Can you have a UTI with negative nitrites?

A negative nitrite test does not rule out a UTI, but a positive one strongly suggests infection. Infection with non-nitrate-reducing organisms will result in a negative nitrite test.

Can you have a UTI without positive nitrites?

If there are nitrites in your urine, it may mean that you have a UTI. But, even if no nitrites are found, you may still have an infection. That's because some types of bacteria don't change nitrates into nitrites.

Are nitrites or leukocytes more specific for UTI?

A study5 of symptomatic men with UTI in primary care found urinary nitrite to have a sensitivity of 38 percent and a specificity of 84 percent; leukocyte esterase had a sensitivity of 54 percent and a specificity of 55 percent.

Do leukocytes in urine always mean infection?

Only very low levels of leukocytes, if any, are normally found in the urine. A high leukocyte content in the urine may indicate an infection or other underlying inflammatory medical problems.
