When can I renew?
You can renew up to:
- 1 year before your license expires. It usually expires on your birthday.
- or
- 60 days after it's expired. We won’t charge a late fee, but you could get a ticket or fine from law enforcement.
If your license expired over:
For military personnel
You don't need to renew during the term of your military service if you're:
- A member of the armed forces or National Guard on active duty.
- A reservist called to duty for 180 days or more.
- The spouse or dependent of an active member of the military.
Your license remains valid as long as you're on active duty. For more information, see Military personnel.
Fees
A standard license costs $9 per year to renew. You may renew for 6 ($54) or 8 years ($72). Calculate your fees based on:
- Your endorsements.
- Whether you’re upgrading to an enhanced card.
- Whether you’re renewing late.
- Whether you choose the 6- or 8-year renewal option.
What if I haven't received my driver license yet?

Are you a twin or triplet?
When you get your driver license or ID card, we may ask if you’re a twin or triplet. Answering this question is voluntary.
We share this information with the Washington State Twin Registry. The Registry will contact you and ask if you’d like to join the Twin Registry. Learn more about the program on the Washington State Twin Registry website.
I received a renewal notice or other correspondence for someone who's deceased, what should I do?
You can ignore the notice or send us a copy of the death certificate by:

The death certificate is issued by the county medical examiner or coroner. After it's issued, the Department of Health notifies us - this can take several months. As soon as we receive the notice, we'll update their record. This should stop all future correspondence.
You don't have to return the person's license or ID card. You can keep it as a memento if you wish or discard it.
Not all driver’s license renewals can be completed at DMV express offices. The below renewals must be completed at a DMV hub office by appointment only.

Who’s eligible
You can renew your driver’s license online on your license expiration date or as early as 180 days (six months) before your driver’s license expires.
You cannot renew online if any of the following are true for you:
- You didn’t get a new photo taken the last time you renewed your driver’s license.
- You’re applying for a REAL ID license for the first time. To get a REAL ID, please make an in-person appointment.
- You are active-duty U.S. military or were honorably discharged in the last 60 days and wish to do a no fee renewal. Learn more about how military personnel can renew their driver’s license.
- You’re not a U.S. citizen. Please make an appointment to renew in person.
- You have a commercial driver’s license. Learn how to renew a commercial driver’s license.
- Your license is suspended. Learn more about how to resolve a suspension.
- You have a drive-only license. Learn how to renew a drive-only license.
- Your license is expired two or more years. Please follow the procedure for getting a new driver’s license.
- You have an S, V, A, or F endorsement. Please make an appointment to renew in person.
- You do not have a first name or need to update your name. Please make an appointment to renew in person.

How to renew your license in person
Step 1: Gather what you’ll need
- Your current driver’s license
- If you don’t have your current license, you must present one form of acceptable identification from the list of acceptable forms of identification. If DMV does not have your image on file, you will be required to present two acceptable forms of identification.
- Payment for fee. Please see acceptable forms of payment.
Step 2: Gather additional documents (if applicable)
If you are applying for a REAL ID verified license (verified by a gold star on your license or ID card), additional accepted forms of identification are required. If you already have a REAL ID, you don’t need to reapply.
If your name has changed since your ID card was issued, bring documentation to verify your name change to your appointment, such as an original or certified copy of a:
- Marriage license
- Civil union certificate
- Divorce decree
- Probate court name change document
If you are active-duty in the U.S. military, you’re eligible for a no-fee renewal. Bring these documents to your appointment:
- Completed application for a military fee waiver (Form B-88)
- Active military ID
If you were honorably discharged from the U.S. military in the last 60 days and want to complete a no-fee renewal, bring these documents to your appointment:
- Completed application for a military fee waiver (Form B-88)
- An original copy of your DD-214 form, also known as a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty.
Step 3: Make an appointment
Appointments for license renewal can be made at a DMV office, select AAA locations, and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union offices (Milford | North Haven | Norwalk).
NOTE: AAA locations and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union may charge a convenience fee up to $8 per DMV transaction.
Step 4: Get your license in the mail

- An application for waiver of driver’s license fee form (Form B-88. The signature of the Commissioned Officer in charge is required.)
- Your active military ID

Public passenger endorsement renewals
Public passenger endorsements (PPE) are a special driver’s license category known as public service licenses that certify a person to drive a passenger transportation vehicle such as a school bus, taxis, airport shuttles, etc.) PPEs need to be renewed in person.
In Connecticut, there are four types of public passenger endorsements: S, V, A, or F—learn more about the different endorsements and process for getting them For PPEs, you must have a current, legible, unexpired medical certificate (dated within a year) completed by a certified medical examiner on file with the DMV prior to renewal.

"S" endorsement operators must also successfully pass all sections of the endorsement-specific road test to obtain the proper endorsements on your license. You must wait two to five business days after you pass your road test to obtain an endorsement on your license. This test must be dated within one year for renewal.
Additional renewal requirements for “V” endorsement holders:
Present a copy of your school bus/STV driver training certificate (Form R-360) (dated within one year) at your renewal appointment.

Who’s eligible to renew by mail or email
You can renew by mail in the following scenarios:
Military
If you’re active-duty U.S. military or were honorably discharged in the last 60 days, you can renew your driver’s license by mail for free. Learn more about how military personnel can renew their driver’s license by mail for free.
Medically unable to appear
If you have a major medical condition and are unable to go to a DMV office location, you can request a renewal by mail by completing an application to renew by mail (Form P-417).
If you’d like to downgrade to a non-driver ID from a license, you’ll need to complete an additional form (Form P-417) and surrender your license.
Temporarily out of state or country
If you’re currently not in Connecticut or the U.S., you can renew by mail and the license will be mailed to the out of state/country address.
Incarcerated
If you are incarcerated, you can renew your license by mail. You must provide your inmate number and the license will be sent to your facility.

Who’s not eligible to renew by mail or email
You can’t renew by mail if any of the following are true for you:
- Your new driver's license or ID is only mailed to the mailing address you provide DMV. If you have mail forwarding, you will NOT receive your driver's license or ID.
- Your last renewal was processed by mail or online. You need to make an appointment to a DMV branch to take a new picture.
- You have a commercial driver’s license or any public passenger endorsements.
- You have a drive-only license. A drive-only license must be renewed in person at a DMV office.
- If you have established residency in another state, you’ll need to get a license in your state of residency and aren’t allowed to renew your Connecticut driver’s license.

To renew by mail:
- Complete an application to renew by mail (Form B-350).
- Provide a check or money order made payable to “DMV” for the appropriate fee. All checks must be drawn on a U.S. bank and made payable in U.S. funds.

How military personnel can renew their Connecticut drivers license
If you’re active-duty U.S. military and your home of record is Connecticut, you may renew your Connecticut driver’s license for free.
What to do:
- Complete a Request for a Connecticut Driver's License/Identifications Card by Mail (Form B-350)
- In order to waive the renewal fee, submit an Application for Waiver of Operator's License Fee (Form B-88).

Military with honorable discharge
Once you receive an honorable discharge, you have 60 days after the date of discharge to renew your Connecticut driver license.In-person license renewals are provided by appointment only.
This policy only applies to individuals who have been honorably discharged and are able to present documentation to prove this. Military personnel with honorable discharge can also qualify for a one-time renewal fee waiver.Renewal of a commercial driver license (CDL) or public service license by mail
