Now in a beautiful paperback edition, David Lynch's Catching the Big Fish provides a rare window into the internationally acclaimed filmmaker's methods as an artist, his personal working style, and the immense creative benefits he has experienced from the practice of meditation.

Catching the Big Fish comes as a revelation to the legion of fans who have longed to better understand Lynch's personal vision. And it is equally compelling to those who wonder how they can nurture their own creativity.

Catching Ideas

Ideas are like fish.

If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you've got to go deeper.

Down deep, the fish are more powerful and more pure. They're huge and abstract. And they're very beautiful.

I look for a certain kind of fish that is important to me, one that can translate to cinema. But there are all kinds of fish swimming down there. There are fish for business, fish for sports. There are fish for everything.

Everything, anything that is a thing, comes up from the deepest level. Modern physics calls that level the Unified Field. The more your consciousness-your awareness-is expanded, the deeper you go toward this source, and the bigger the fish you can catch.

And you put all that junk there. Now you take this elevator, which is going to be the dive within. And you go down below the building; you go to the Unified Field beneath the building - pure consciousness. And it's like electric gold. You experience that. And that electric gold activates these little cleaning robots. They start going, and they start cleaning the rooms. They put in gold where the dirt and junk and garbage were. These stresses aht were in there like coils of barbed wire can unwind. They evaporate, they come out. You're cleaning and infusing simultaneously. You're on the road to a beautiful state of enlightenment."

Wow, thanks, dude, that's really helpful.

What's sadder - that I actually bought this book, at Spoonbill & Sugartown in Williamsburg, or that I'm spending part of my Friday night railing against it?

I recommend listening to this in the Audiobooks version. I listened to it on my iPod and it put me in a great place. David Lynch has this great soothing monotone voice that radiates the sincerity and peacefulness of his message. This is David Lynch's attempt to explain his approach to craft, be it film or art or woodworking, and the manner in which he intuits direction; navigating the course of his passions through the balance he obtains in his spiritual life.

Lynch charts some of his cinematic journey through the lens of these metaphysical beliefs. Eraserhead, Twin Peaks, Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive are among the projects mentioned, but you should know going in that this is rarely about the business end of making those movies. Instead, he's concentrating on how he reached certain decisions while constructing them. He sticks to the theme of creativity through a meditative template, and so the material skews to appeal primarily to the Lynchian acolyte over the garden variety fan.

I come for an odd reason. Dune. As this is a film he has disowned, it's rare to find him discussing it. He did a little of that here. Not enough, though.

David Lynch has always been an inspiration to me. His films, of course, but also his painting, his carpentry, and even his unfilmed scenarios like RONNIE ROCKET and ONE SALIVA BUBBLE are beautiful mysteries waiting to be uncovered. And now, a book.

David Lynch has always been an inspiration to me. His films, of course, but also his painting, his carpentry, and even his unfilmed scenarios like RONNIE ROCKET and ONE SALIVA BUBBLE are beautiful mysteries waiting to be uncovered. And now, a book.

Though Lynch doesn't consider himself much of a writer "I have trouble with words" he admits, this book went a bit deeper than much of the work he has previously displayed to the public. I say book, however, I listened to the audio book, read by Lynch himself (a used copy of the book is still en route from an Amazon vendor, which I will read upon arrival). With my iPod headphones on, I had Lynch penetrating my brain for over three hours (one complete reading is 108 minutes).

Lynch, who is infamous about not talking about his work (he thinks DVD director commentaries on DVD are sacrilegious) opens up like never before. He talks about his ideas, his creative process, and most intimately, his experience with Transcendental Meditation.

The cynic might think that this book and its recording is an 108-minute infomercial for Transcendental Meditation and its founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. I don't believe it is. Lynch approaches the mindful practice with his same Jimmy Stewart "gee whiz" enthusiasm as with everything else he does.

If you are a writer, filmmaker, artist, or simply a person interested in the creative process (the Art Life, as Lynch describes it), or Transcendental Meditation, this book was written especially for you.

Lynch then spends the majority of the book on various anecdotes about how he came up with specific ideas for various film projects. Essentially, they just happened - because he meditates.

The book is a brief memoir of Lynch's work on various film projects, the ideas for which he attributes to his practice of transcendental meditation. The details on the film projects are too brief to be of interest to anyone but a Lynch scrapbooker. And the information about meditation is too scant to be of use to anyone with an interest in starting.

If the benefits of transcendental meditation are as natural and automatic as Lynch suggests, then the book will be of no value to those already practising. So it is clearly intended for those who do not. Yet it provides no information about how to go about it, nor does it provide any suggestions for further reading / study / instruction. This seems like a fairly big missed opportunity for putting people on the right track ( as he is fond of saying ).

It's an interesting read, but you won't learn anything - except you should go learn transcendental meditation. From someone else.

I think this is a statement that has struck a chord with a lot of people.

But, reading this book made me seriously reconsider my attitude towards meditation.

“If you have a golf-ball-sized consciousness, when you read a book you’ll have a golf-ball-sized understanding; when you look out of the window, a golf-ball-sized awareness, when you wake up in the morning, a golf-ball-sized wakefulness; and as you go about your day, a golf-ball-sized happiness. But if you can expand your consciousness, make it grow, then when you read that book, you’ll have more understanding, when you look out, more awareness, when you wake up, more wakefulness; and as you go about the day, more inner happiness".

And I should mention the book is much more than on meditation alone. Just two hours of your time and you’ll be reminded about things that matter (but somehow you keep forgetting those) and make you want to practice new techniques right away. Entrepreneurship has a lot to do with ideas. It also has a lot to do about what a person you are and what impact on the environment you have (to enlighten the team you need to be enlightened yourself, right?).

“if you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch a big fish, you’ve got to go deeper’.

I hoped to find out more about transcendental meditation, after all it inspired Stevie Wonder to create three of the best pop albums ever made. He even sings its glory in his song ‘Jesus Children of America’. He even sings its glory in his song ‘Jesus Children of America’. The problem is that none of the books about transcendental meditation, for example HH Maharishi’s own ‘Science of Being and Art of Living,’ say anything about transcendental meditation, they all just sing the praises of TM in an almost glassy eyed fervor, this book being no exception. Tm is good, TM is great, but what exactly is it? What does it try to achieve? Even an imprecise picture would be helpful for people like me whose experience of meditation is free classes issued through Zen and Zen based institutions. For me, a firm believer that ‘God said you must teach as I have taught, for free’, the $3,000 to learn TM leaves a bad taste, but that said I think that I would be able to get around it if anyone was willing to educate about what it is, after all the $3,000, while being a lot of money, is a one time fee. Even the people that I call on the phone, when I ask them what it is, all that they tell me is that I have to take the class to find out.

When going further into Maharishi’s practice and philosophies, it’s almost impossible to not get into the dozens of women who accused him of rape, which leaves one questioning the teachings of this religious leader. Not to mention his famous dealings with The Beatles, who accused him of a healthy sexual appetite for young women as well as a shrewed business side, which he must have had in order to leave behind two-billion dollars when he died. John Lennon penned a song about Maharishi, but then changed the lyrics of his song from ‘Maharishi’ to ‘Sexy Sadie’ in the end. There were also several confrontations between The Beatles and the Maharishi regarding the band feeling exploited by the guru, that he used the band for his own promotion.

In the end though, it’s the art, or the teachings, that people remember and not the man. John Coltrane had a shady figure, though tried to fix himself many time and again. In the end, he battled with addiction his whole life, but his music and musings on Christianity eventually inspired The Church of Coltrane, and I’m not sure that this many years after his death it can be argued that his battles with heroin have inspired teachings about opiates. So maybe this new technique of meditation, the teachings of Maharishi, can lead to a more fulfilling life. Certainly to hear David Lynch talk about his TM practice you would think so, as well as many of the people who have had the opportunity to learn TM. Lynch talks about he release of his anger, which he hadn’t even noticed until his wife pointed it out. He talks about going deep to find the big idea down there, which sounds great. I would love to go deep and find the ‘Big fish.’ Tell me more about it, I say.

But this is not a book to learn about the teachings of the Maharishi, that book may not exist. And if Lynch approached this book as an investigation into his spiritual practice or to educate the curious about what is wonderful about TM, then he failed utterly. Instead, like so many of the followers, Lynch speaks in metaphors that only cloud the understanding of this mysterious spirituality. The reader is certain about Lynch's devotion. Lynch has created TM centers for children and has lectured all over about the benefits of TM, and this book ends up being an open love note to his religion.

What might be redeemable about this book is for the fan of David Lynch, this book gives talks about his creative process in a way that no other book on Lynch does, not even the book, 'Lynch On Lynch' where David outlined and wrote about his early film career. Where that book reads like a memoir and the reader is treated to such things as Lynch's dismay over having the movie 'Dune' taken from his control and the reasons behind his decision to not direct 'Star Wars: Return of the Jedi', this book reads of short philosophic ramblings on Lynch's own creativity. The question that is always asked of authors, artists and filmmakers is 'Where do you get your ideas,' which always manages to stump the artist. After all, the muses are mysterious. And the answers of artists vary from serious to snarky. This book seems to be an honest attempt to give an answer to David's fans. And how are you doing Jo-jo.

A fellow fan of Lynch loaned me this book to read, and I have to say that it was a really interesting read. It was nice to be able to get into Lynch's mindset, and here him talk about various things including his transcendental meditation and some of his films. He included tips on creativity, as well as how to achieve happiness, and some little anecdotes about the creation of some of his pieces.

I once looked into transcendental meditation but I believe it is extremely expensive to start, which is a shame unfortunately as Lynch makes it sound incredibly appealing. As a very creative person who never finds much time to relax and create, I would love to be able to incorporate the practice into my everyday routine. Maybe it will require some more looking into, I don't know.

I wouldn't really recommend this book unless you're a big Lynch fan, unless you are really interested in the meditation and consciousness side. However, if you do love his work, be sure to pick this up and dip in and out of it occasionally, or read it cover to cover anyway. What you take from it is entirely personal to you, but it will bring instant satisfaction on at least some level.

While providing some clear, lucid insights into his creative process, how he worked before discovering transcendental meditation, and interesting trivia such as descriptions of happy accidents on how his films are made and what Kubrick's favourite film was ("Eraserhead", according to Lynch), there's also a downside.

Lynch does get me interested in transcendental meditation, but the theme is so regurgitated and repeated throughout the entire book that he feels a bit like a cult member trying to lure you in. It's very "transcendental meditation can cure anything, make you do anything, will overcome anything". I particularly disliked the chapter where you're to imagine you're the Empire State Building and transcendental meditation is electric gold; just swap the junk in all your rooms for the electric gold and you're all good. Yeah.

To me, it all reeks of an empty promise, mainly because Lynch doesn't explain how transcendental meditation works. And that knowledge, my dears, is expensive to attain.

So, if you can shut the lid on that all-permeating aspect of the book, Lynch does bring interesting stream-of-consciousness stuff to the table, especially on how he's overcome obstacles in his creative process and how he seems very open to new things that influence and come to him.

I'm curious. I'll be honest, I'm curious. But I'm also skeptical.

See, the thing is, I don't have a lot of experience with religion. TM sounds close-ish, or like maybe it provides the good side of religion.

But, the things I do have experience with, I think I would say it's a mistake to spend a lot of money up front.

Let's talk exercise. Do I think it's good for people to get into exercise? YES! Do I think it's a good idea to spend $1500 to get certified in a proprietary form of exercise, like Crossfit or Zumba? Fuck no!

Let's talk writing. Do I think it's a good idea for a person to take a shot at writing? Fuck yeah! Do I think you should buy some pricey gizmo right off the bat? Hell to the no!

I sort of think that any habit, whether it's artistic, physical, whatever, is something you should be able to try out without spending $500+ dollars before you've even begun. I mean, for real, let's have a challenge here. Is there a hobby or habit or something that requires you to spend more than $500 to have a starter level entry?

You can be a filmmaker with your phone. You can get a pad and a pen. Hell, you can even get on a motorcycle and at least try it out without spending $500.

I think I'd like to try TM or something very much like it. But, to be honest, I guess I don't think my inner calm is worth $500. Or, maybe I should say I don't think there's $500 of inner calm to be found inside me. That seems more accurate.

"You can understand conflict, but you don't have to live in it."

I dunno, this all makes sense to me.
Make the time for practices that work for you - it's as simple as that.

"You become more and more you - the final cut."

NOTE: Revisited a year later and enjoyed it even more. "The world is as you are" is just....yes.
"Don't fight the darkness. Don't even worry about the darkness. Turn on the light and the darkness goes."

2 stars. 1 more star since I could see Lynch speaking those words and I really like him.
Seriously, I'm feeling a bit odd after finishing this book as it's more like having a chat with someone rather than reading a book; it's exactly like I had a few questions from Lynch and I've got answers from him. And the whole book is like: "Meditation is awesome. Everything will be perfect if you meditate... (a few memories and experiences)... You know, meditation is awesome."

I understand that most books about creativity are ungodly narrations of piffle that are only moderately better than the moral life lessons at the end of an episode of He-Man, but I give David Lynch a pass on this because the man has no reason or cause to bullshit. Ernestness, conviction, and sheer honesty are the defining qualities of Lynch as an artist and the man has never tried to be anything he isn't: which is weird.

This book is a blend of meditations upon his career as an artist, but it's also an opportunity to just catch some of the thoughts that spring from the man's mind. And the fundamental purpose of this work is to speak honestly about how Transcendental Meditation has impacted his life and work as an artist. Most of the reviews of this book I've read complain that the book is just yet another in a long line of painfully obnoxious self-help drivel stories, and each person has to interpret a work from their own viewpoint.

There are plenty of passages that easily digestible and just as easily forgettable, but Lynch offers his reader more than just a bunch of empty aphorisms about the quality of his creativity. He tries to honestly explore where his ideas come from, and offer. few glimpses as to how meditation has helped him as an artist as well as a human being. And so again I argue that this book is simply a demonstration of his conviction. Rather than just throw some words at his reader knowing that name recognition will move a few copies, this book often just feels like an honest conversation.

David Lynch doesn't a fuck generally, and he doesn't feel like he owes anybody anything. And that method, or madness, just speaks to an honesty I respect. And this book was a reminder why I love his particular demented form of madness.

This reads like it was taken from interviews/speeches from David over the years.

After neglecting meditation, I was hoping reading someone I admire would kick start it again.

The way he talks about bliss is a bit silly, but after listening to a few Naval Ravikant podcasts - I would like to have complete control over my emotions.

Maybe my subconscious will pick up one of these koans.

Great little collection of insights into the relationship between Lynch’s meditation and creative practices - many valuable takeaways for me, and bonus points for the unified consciousness awareness, which is surprisingly rare to read from celebrated artists, yet a most pivotal point of progress for the upcoming century ~ recommended to artists, film fans, meditators and the cosmically inclined!

TM will solve everything. EVERYTHING. There I saved you a couple hours of your life and a tone deaf chapter droning on about awesome low def digital video is. Hey, Mr. Lynch- If you are noticing the screws in the Sci-Fi set, you should go back and read a few chapters before.

There's not much here, it's mostly a sales pitch for transcendental meditation, but it was a fun audiobook to listen to because it was read by Lynch. I listened to the audiobook of this in 2009 and then decided to read it this time. I definitely prefer the audiobook since it's read by the author in his very distinctive voice and delivery.

The book is set up in very short chapters on one idea each. I like books like that because it makes it easy to pick up and put down. There are many ideas in this book but many of them are about how you need to meditate more. Basically meditate and life is better is the general idea.

If you're a filmmaker and meditation enthusiast then you will love this book. I found it somewhat inspiring but very repetitive. It wasn't a long book but could have been better edited. Recommended, but not highly.

He attended various art schools, married, and fathered future director Jennifer Chambers Lynch shortly after he turned 21. That experience, plus attending art school in a particularly violent and run-down area of Philadelphia, inspired ERASERHEAD(1977), a film that he began in the early 1970s (after a couple of shorts) and which he would work on obsessively for five years. The final film was initially judged to be almost unreleasable, but thanks to the efforts of distributor Ben Barenholtz, it secured a cult following and enabled Lynch went on to make such cult films as THE ELEPHANT MAN, DUNE, BLUE VELVET, WILD AT HEART, MULHOLLAND DRIVE, LOST HIGHWAY, and the television series TWIN PEAKS. Lynch is also a renowned painter and author. ...more

Every December, as we wrap up our annual Goodreads Reading Challenge, we ask our book-loving colleagues a simple yet incredibly tough...

“Ideas are like fish. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you’ve got to go deeper. Down deep, the fish are more powerful and more pure. They’re huge and abstract. And they’re very beautiful.” — 196 likes

“We all want expanded consciousness and bliss. It's a natural, human desire. And a lot of people look for it in drugs. But the problem is that the body, the physiology, takes a hard hit on drugs. Drugs injure the nervous system, so they just make it harder to get those experiences on your own.
I have smoked marijuana, but I no longer do. I went to art school in the 1960s, so you can imagine what was going on. Yet my friends were the ones who said, "No, no, no, David, don't you take those drugs." I was pretty lucky.
Besides, far more profound experiences are available naturally. When your consciousness stars expanding, those experiences are there. All those things can be seen. It's just a matter of expanding that ball of consciousness. And the ball of consciousness can expand to be infinite and unbounded. It's totality. You can have totality. So all those experiences are there for you, without the side effects of drugs.”
