The coffee grinder sits above the basket of grounds, causing all the steam to rise directly into the grinder. Every pot of coffee causes a wet, terrible mess in the grinder (which of course needs to be totally dry to start a new pot). After a couple of months I got tired of cleaning the grinder and resorted to buying g ground coffee. Also the grinder is small and I like strong coffee, so I can only make half a pot through the grinder.I’m posting some pics of the condensate left in the wet grinder.

This review is for the 10-cup DGB-850 with Thermal Carafe (stainless steel).

After using this coffee maker for over 10 weeks, we are quite happy with it overall (after learning a few lessons). Perhaps this is an updated version of the model, but we have not had any of the issues some reviews mention, like problems cleaning the grinder burrs. In fact, this version does not even have user-access to the grinder parts, based on the videos and descriptions from others with problems. This model advertises that the grinder assembly auto-rinses all the grinds from the grinder - there is no disassembly to get to the grinder itself, and it appears to work fine without access. All we do to clean it after each use is rinse out the permanent filter itself (or toss the paper filter), and wipe moisture from the holder and the housing above the coffee carafe platform.

PROS:
* Coffee tastes very good - grind/strength controls allows pretty good control over desired taste, by adjusting the amount of water used with each grind range (see my grind testing chart image, and table below). My wife likes coffee a bit weaker, so we use 7-8 cups of water with a 6-cup Grind, for instance, adjusting Strength as needed for the exact amount of water used.
* With the thermal carafe, the heating plate below the carafe warms the stainless steel carafe as the coffee is brewed, so there is no need to pre-heat a cold carafe (which we had to do with our previous coffee maker). Works well - the heater is turned off automatically after the coffee is brewed, so it does not over-heat the coffee. The thermal carafe keeps the coffee pretty warm for an hour or two.
* At least so far, we have not had any issues with cleaning the grinder burrs - easy clean-up.
* We really like the ability to use either the permanent filter basket, or a paper filter. With a septic system, we cannot rinse grounds down the drain, and it is sometimes a pain to dump grounds outside in bad weather (so the paper filter is handy in heavy snow). We did not have this option with our old blade-grinder coffee maker.

CONS (Lessons Learned):
* Pouring water into the reservoir is a pain with the coffee maker under a cabinet. You need access to the back of the coffee maker to pour from a bit behind, since pouring from the front can let water spill out the overflow slots at the back of the reservoir.
* As some reviews mention, pouring from the carafe can be a bit tricky with the lid on, if you are not careful. A full pot pours fine, but steeper angles of pour as the carafe gets emptier can make a mess. I remove the lid for pouring as the pot gets emptier.
* To get just the right coffee strength for your personal tastes, it helps to understand exactly how the coffee maker adjusts the grind for the settings (Grind and Strength). I could not find this information in the manual or any on-line reference. See my "Strength Notes" below - between knowing what each combination does, and adjusting the amount of water for each setting, you can get pretty much just what you want, without wasting coffee.

STRENGTH NOTES:
At first, we found it a bit limiting to have fixed settings for only 4, 6, 8 & 10 cups of coffee. And I could not find any good description anywhere about exactly what the Grind control and the Strength control do - does one adjust the fineness of the grinding mechanism, and the other the amount of coffee beans ground (based on the amount of time the grinder runs)? If so, which controls which? All the manual really says is "The burr grinder will grind the correct amount of beans, and automatically adjust the coffee/water ratio for low cup settings."

So, I started experimenting with different settings to see what each does, based on the weight of the ground coffee put into the filter. I weighed the grounds after brewing each pot at different setting combinations, letting them drain quite a while first (wet grounds, but well drained). The chart in the image attached to this review (also shown in the table below) shows my results - not every setting available, but enough to figure out what is happening, I believe. From visual comparisons, I could not see any apparent differences in the coarseness of the grounds themselves with any combination, so I assume that the grinder does not change the coarseness/fineness of the grind itself, only the amount of beans ground, for both the strength and grind (# of cups) settings. But with the information in the chart, and by adjusting the amount of water you put in the reservoir for each brew, you can get pretty close to the strength you want.

Ground Coffee Weights, Cuisinart DGB-850 Coffeemaker
GRIND STRENGTH GRAMS (avg.)
=============================
4 Cups Extra Bold 75
6 Cups Regular 91
6 Cups Bold 102
6 Cups Extra Bold 120
8 Cups Bold 122
8 Cups Extra Bold 140

So, for example, we brew a slightly weaker-than-recommended pot by setting the Grind (# of cups) to 6 cups, adding either 7 or 8 cups of water to the reservoir, and setting the Strength as a kind of fine-tuning adjustment to get just the strength we want for that batch (my wife likes it a bit weaker, I like it a bit stronger - we alternate!).

Hopefully this will help you fine-tune your perfect cup of coffee. Happy brewing!

Cuisinart burr grind & brew 12 cup automatic coffee maker

Cuisinart burr grind & brew 12 cup automatic coffee maker

Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 20, 2022

This is my 3rd grind and brew in 9 years. I absolutely love this coffeemaker. The new model has several changes. The machine is very sleek and nice looking, but bigger and takes up a bit more counter space. Nothing obscene. The bean hopper is wider but not deep enough, so it holds less coffee beans and you have to refill more often. The previous held up to half lb. of beans. The carafe has a wider opening making it seem bigger but it is a 12 cup. The water reservoir is bigger and you can easily fill it up from the right or left side. The coffee basket comes as one piece now with the lid that lifts to remove the filter for cleaning. Very easy peasy. I can’t believe people complained about having to clean the 3 pieces after every use on the previous model. It doesn’t take long. The coffee chute no longer comes apart on this model and no more scraping coffee buildup. There’s a setting for cleaning the chute and grinder. There’s one thing I am completely unhappy about this new model and I read up about - amount of ground coffee. I have adjusted the settings many times to conserve coffee and selected regular strength, but no luck. This model grinds a lot of beans per cup, so it seems you use more coffee weekly. I will have to live with it because I love my grind and brew, and the smell of fresh brewed coffee every morning in my home that resembles a coffeehouse. Just delightful. One last thing - the reason I’ve owned 3 in about 9 years. The first one had its heating plate/element burn out after the 3 years warranty. The second one I just replaced lasted a bit over 5 years but the exact same thing happened - heating plate/element burned out. It must be a Cuisinart defect on these models. Whatever it is, it needs to be fixed. I will keep enjoying every cup of coffee in this new model, and take in the aroma of fresh ground beans every morning.

The Cuisinart DGB-450, 10-cup coffemaker, is a replacement for my four-cup, Haier, grind and brew coffeemaker, which stopped working. I just got done enjoying a cup of coffee from the Cuisinart and was inspired to compose a review.

The coffee was quite good. I added a dollop of Silk "Next" milk and it added a wonderfully creamy taste. I only used the permanent filters (not the paper ones), with both machines, and with the Cuisinart, there were very little grounds in the coffee, unlike the Haier. This Cuisinart differs from the more expensive models in that it has a blade (not a burr) grinder, and that it does not have a strength control. I am not sure if the strength control is a gimmick or if it really works, but I got a good strength of coffee from the DGB-450.
It is programmable (like the others), but I do not plan to use that feature because it does not take very long to brew two cups of coffee for myself. So, I can't comment on the programmability. The clock is easy to set, however.

The grinder is noisy, but is much quieter than the grinder in the Haier. The Haier was so loud, I had to run out of the kitchen whenever the grinder turned on.

One cool feature of the Cuisinart is the self-opening filter drawer. There is a button on the side of the coffeemaker, and the filter drawer swings open, gradually, by itself, when you press it. Initially, I did not notice the button, and I tried to pull out the drawer manually--LOL. Couldn't figure out why it wouldn't open. I am not one who fully studies the owner's manual before using a new toy.

The only thing I am not crazy about is the carafe. The "collar" design along the top part of the carafe, makes it a bit difficult to fully empty it. I would give the Cuisinart five stars if it did not have a "clunky" carafe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bonita y funcional pero requiere limpieza constantemente

Reviewed in Mexico 🇲🇽 on April 29, 2021

I bought a similar model in 2008. It lasted me for 12,years. Went in for a similar model. It functions as well (so far). However, the quality of body of the unit is pathetic. The plastic used is weak, the compartments do not close properly, they are misaligned. Poor poor quality. How the value

3.0 out of 5 stars Good coffee but the Maintenance!

Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on October 26, 2021

The grinder and coffee filter are high maintenance. My old burr grinder on my previous machine, you could just add the beans, as needed. This one, you have to take out the unit and clean it after each use.
The coffee filter is in a removeable compartment that has a lid through which the coffee grinds go through so you have yet another par to clean daily.

The result is undeniably good coffee but I'm wondering of a hand grinder and just pouring the grinds in the filter wouldn't have been less maintenance and cheaper.

Attached is a picture of all the parts needed to be cleaned each time you use it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed

Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on April 21, 2021

I wanted a grind and brew style. I chose this Cuisinart model because I’ve had the same Cuisinart for over 10 years and it still works.
First try worked beautifully but I only made 4 cups. For the morning I prepared the full pot (12 cups), I followed all instructions to the letter using the paper filter provided. Coffee grounds ended up in coffee and coffee leaked out of the bottom. Next day tried the copper basket, it turned out a little better but still had a lot of grounds in coffee and a huge mess in the machine.
Purchased better quality paper filters and tried again. Once more, coffee leaked out the bottom, grounds in the carafe and a mess in the machine.
I have finally figured out the sweet spot (sort of). You can only make 10 cups at a time if you don’t want overflowing water and grinds. Using the basket provided and only 10 scoops of coffee.
I am considering returning it. There is definitely a flaw in the it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Grinder very Loud !!

Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on July 9, 2019

Likes : The machine was very easy to use. Coffee at 1-4 cups really tastes great. Dislikes: The grinder is so loud. (Louder than my alarm clock at full volume). Only limited amount of beans can be accomodated in the holder, the result is that when you make 12 cups, coffee is a bit mild. You need to use less water to produce a stronger coffee. In summary, this coffee maker is great for 1 to 6 cups of coffee but you better use another machine to make a bigger batch. To most people grinder noise would be a deal breaker but a great cup of coffee is worth it.

Can Cuisinart burr grinder grind espresso?

From fine ground for espresso to a coarser grind for pour-over or drip coffee and everything in between, this burr grinder is a perfect solution for at-home brewing. If you've recently purchased your first Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme burr coffee mill, you might be a bit overwhelmed with all of the knobs and options.

What is grind control on Cuisinart?

Use to turn off the grinder when using pre-ground coffee. Turn the Grind Control to choose the desired amount of coffee beans to grind.
