To obtain a New Jersey driver's license, permit, non-driver ID card or boat license, you must prove your identity by passing the 6 Points of ID Verification. You must show:

  • At least one Primary Document
  • At least one Secondary Document
  • A verifiable Social Security Number (SSN), or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN), or a letter of ineligibility for an SSN from the Social Security Administration (SSA)
    • *Please note that the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) has adopted an amendment that will remove the SSA letter option and replace it with an affidavit around June 1st for individuals to attest to their ineligibility for an SSN. 
  • Proof of address

What’s a state identification card? 

A state ID is an important document to have with you that helps other identify who you are. If you are 14 years of age or older in NJ you can apply for a non-driver photo identification card. You’ll need your state ID to apply for a job, open a bank account and many other things. To apply for an ID you will need to follow the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission 6-point system (below). Getting your driver’s license and/or permit can be an exciting time in your life. What’s a birth certificate? 

A certified birth certificate is an official government-issued record of a person’s birth, printed on security paper and includes an official raised, embossed, impressed or multicolored seal. A birth certificate is one of the most important legal documents you can have to establish your identity. You’ll need it to get a Social Security card or U.S. passport, apply for a driver’s license, prove U.S. citizenship, and apply for a job, just to name a few examples. 

You should keep your birth certificate in a safe and secure place. If you don’t have a copy of your birth certificate, you can ask your CP&P worker for a copy.

What is a social security card? 

A Social Security number is a nine-digit number issued to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and temporary residents. Your nine-digit Social Security number is your first and continuous connection with Social Security. It helps identify and accurately record your covered wages or self-employment earnings. A Social Security number is important because you need it to get a job, collect Social Security benefits and get some other government services. You should keep your Social Security card in a safe place with your other important papers and avoid giving it out unnecessarily. Keep in mind that in many cases, even if you lost your card, you may not need a replacement. In most cases, simply knowing your Social Security number is enough. However, if you need a replacement card it’s important to know that you are limited to request a new social security card only 10 times.

What is a passport? 

A passport is an official document issued by a government that certifies the holder's identification and citizenship in the United States. It allows you to travel to and from other countries under its protection. 

Having this documentation with you while traveling in another country is essential in case something goes wrong, such as if you are hurt and require medical attention.
