Crockpot Roast Beef Recipe Tips

  • For firmer potatoes, add them halfway through the cooking time instead of at the start.
  • Do not use russet potatoes.
  • Sear the roast first, brown the onions, and deglaze the pan with red wine before adding ingredients to the crockpot. This adds so much flavor!

How Long to Cook Roast Beef in Crock Pot

We cook our crockpot roast for 9 hours over low heat. You can cook yours anywhere from 8-10 hours until it's fork-tender to your liking.

Slow Cooker Roast Beef Recipes FAQs

Do you have to brown a roast before putting it in the crockpot?

I recommend searing your roast before placing it in the crockpot to give it more flavor. Don't skip this step, it makes the dish so much tastier! Give it a quick sear on all sides in a pan until it's browned, then transfer it to the pot.

What are the best vegetables for slow cooker roast beef?

Celery, potatoes, onions, and carrots cook right in the pot with our slow cooker beef and gravy. You can use red or Yukon gold potatoes.

How to Thicken Roast Beef Gravy

We use a mixture of cornstarch and broth from the crockpot to thicken the gravy inside the pot and find it thickens the beef gravy perfectly. If you want it a bit thicker, use a little more cornstarch.

When should I add potatoes to my roast in crock pot?

The potatoes and carrots should only be added during the last 45 minutes of cooking so they don't overcook.

Do you put vegetables in bottom or top of crock pot roast?

Prepare vegetables and add to the bottom of a lightly greased 6 qt. (or larger) slow cooker. Heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat in a large cast iron skillet. Using tongs, sear meat on all sides until browned and place on top of vegetables in the crockpot.

Do you have to sear a pot roast before putting it in the crock pot?

You heat olive oil in a skillet or Dutch oven on the stove, then sear the roast for about one minute per side before transferring it to the slow cooker. Not every slow cooker pot roast recipe requires you to sear the meat before cooking, but doing so can add even more flavor to your final dish!

Do you need to cover the roast with water in a slow cooker?

Should A Roast Be Covered With Liquid In A Slow Cooker? You do not have to cover a roast with liquid in a slow cooker. No matter the size of the roast you want to cook in the slow cooker, the amount of liquid should never cover more than half of the roast.
