Food stamps fort bend county texas

The United States Department of Agriculture administers the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This program, previously known as food stamps, is designed to help guarantee low-income households and individuals access to a basic level of nutrition.

In Fort Bend County and throughout the country, SNAP households are a major focus of the American Community Survey (ACS), conducted each year by the U.S. Census Bureau. A household in Fort Bend County is a group of people living in a house, apartment, or other housing unit. Households may be family households or non-family households.

Unlike the Census, which is an exact count of people and households every ten years, ACS statistics are estimated based on a representative survey sample. For locations with populations under 60,000, the ACS is only available in 5-year estimates, rather than single-year periods. The 5-year estimates provide greater geographical granularity but a less granular time period. Note that the data in this article is presented as counts of households, not of individuals.

Notes:

The U.S. Census Bureau provides annual estimates of income and poverty statistics for all school districts, counties, and states through the Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE) program. The bureau's main objective with this program is to provide estimates of income and poverty for the administration of federal programs and the allocation of federal funds to local jurisdictions. In addition to these federal programs, state and local programs use the income and poverty estimates for distributing funds and managing programs.

SNAP benefits are one of the data sources used in producing SAIPE program estimates. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the name for what was formerly known as the federal Food Stamp Program, as of October 1, 2008. The SNAP benefits data represent the number of participants in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for each county, state, and the District of Columbia from 1981 to the latest available year.
