The previous Gifts… (1) Wisdom = the desire for the things of God, and to direct our whole life and all our actions to His honor and glory I did some extensive research on the subject of Wisdom and what the Church and Sacred Scripture has to say about this particular gift that – appropriately so – is the FIRST gift of the Seven Gifts… The writers of, “Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, The Song of Songs, Wisdom, and Sirach. The writers of the Sapiential Books consider wisdom in its relation to man as the perfection of knowledge showing itself in action.” emphasis added… Read more on Wisdom… (2)Understanding – enables us to know more clearly the mysteries of faith The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches… The Holy Spirit gives a spiritual understanding of the Word of God to those who read or hear it, according to the dispositions of their hearts. By means of the words, actions, and symbols that form the structure of a celebration, the Spirit puts both the faithful and the ministers into a living relationship with Christ, the Word and Image of the Father, so that they can live out the meaning of what they hear, contemplate, and do in the celebration. ~ CCC§1101, emphasis added When worshiping God and His Son, those who receive this gift of UNDERSTANDING are more able to give 100% of themselves because they KNOW WHO they are worshiping. They KNOW WHY they are worshiping. And their lives begin to REFLECT that UNDERSTANDING in what they say and do. Read more on UNDERSTANDING... (3) Counsel – warns us of the deceits of the devil, and of the dangers to salvation. “The gift of counsel enables one to judge promptly and correctly what action is to be taken in a particular case… the gift of counsel enables one to decide by a sort of supernatural intuition the correct course of action.” ~Encyclopedia Dictionary of the Bible, Welcome to the Catholic Church, CD-ROM, emphasis added Read more on Counsel… (3) Fortitude – strengthen us to do the will of God in all things … Fortitude (sometimes called strength, courage, or might) is also one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. ~Glossary, Catechism of the Catholic Church Though there is not much to be said about Fortitude – probably because the word speaks for itself – it is important to note when Fortitude is addressed in the Faith and for what purpose… Read more about Fortitude… (5) Knowledge – enables us to discover the Will of God in all things… King Solomon says this with regards to Wisdom, which in turn, is also with regards to Knowledge… For she is an initiate in the knowledge of God, and an associate in His works. ~ Wisdom 8:4,emphasis added Read more about KNOWLEDGE… Today’s GIFT is: PIETY (6) Piety – Love God as a Father, and obey Him because we love Him. One of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. This gift begets in one’s heart a filial affection for God and a tender devotion towards persons and things consecrated to Him, and gives one a holy joy in his religious duties. ~ Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Bible, Welcome to the Catholic Church, CD-ROM, emphasis added Piety is also a VIRTUE. Like the GIFT, the virtue also displays in the subject a LOVE for God Almighty… That virtue by which man is devoted to God in filial obedience and reverential love. It is called godliness. The great patriarchs of old gave an outstanding example of piety. Abraham was even prepared to make the greatest sacrifices to please God (Gen. 22:12); Jacob recognized the loving hand of Providence guiding him throughout life (Gen. 48:15); Joseph would not consent to do anything that offended God grievously (Gen. 39:9). ~Ibid Piety also encourages the recipient to seek out holiness and desire holiness as Jesus commanded His followers, Be Holy as My Father is Holy… With the coming of the Covenant on Mount Sinai, all Israel pledged wholehearted devotion to the will of God revealed in the Law (Ex. 19:48; Deut. 6). But by no means did God desire of Israel merely external piety, for He exhorted all to be holy in imitation of His own intrinsic holiness (Lev. 11:44; 19:2; 20:26). ~Ibid, emphasis added. And as in the GIFT of Knowledge, the theme of suffering returns in Piety as St. Paul reminds Timothy… In his first letter to Timothy, Paul has much to say about Christian piety (1 Tim. 2:2; 4:7-8; 6:6-7). True piety manifests itself also in genuine love of neighbor (James 1:26-27; [cf. Mt 22: 37-39]). It must be ready to suffer trials and persecution (2 Tim. 3:12). To reflect upon the words of St. James… What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him? If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. ~James 2: 14-17, emphasis added **Also disproving Martin Luther’s claim of “Faith alone”, of which you will not find anywhere in the Bible. ** But I digress… In ACTION! we find Piety hard at work. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us… In addition to the liturgy, Christian life is nourished by various forms of popular piety, rooted in the different cultures. While carefully clarifying them in the light of faith, the Church fosters the forms of popular piety that express an evangelical instinct and a human [WISDOM]… that [enriches the] Christian life. ~ CCC§1679, emphasis added It continues to speak on the life of prayer of ALL Christians, but especially of the YOUNG… The catechesis of children, young people, and adults aims at teaching them to meditate on The Word of God in personal prayer, practicing it in liturgical prayer, and internalizing it at all times in order to bear fruit in a new life. Catechesis is also a time for the discernment and education of popular piety. The memorization of basic prayers offers an essential support to the life of prayer, but it is important to help learners savor their meaning.~ CCC§2688 Piety without meaning – that is without LOVE – is merely words spoken without understanding… At the time of Our Lord the Pharisees emphasized external ritualism and regulations so much that true interior piety was in danger of being lost. But Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, clarified the issue (Matt. 6:1-18). Christian piety, according to the teaching and example of Our Lord, consists in solid faith, childlike confidence, submission to God’s will, humility and obedience to authority. ~ Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Bible, Welcome to the Catholic Church, CD-ROM, emphasis added If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. ~1 Cor 13: 1-3, emphasis added. Therefore, practiced Piety done “For the LOVE of God” will always enrich and nourish the participant… By kindness and piety guilt is expiated, and by the fear of the LORD man avoids evil. When the LORD is pleased with a man’s ways, He makes even his enemies be at peace with him. ~ Proverbs 16: 6-7, emphasis added Is not your piety a source of confidence, and your integrity of life your hope? Reflect now, what innocent person perishes? Since when are the upright destroyed? ~ Job 4: 6-7, emphasis added As such, the LORD Himself calls ALL His faithful children to… “Sow for yourselves justice, reap the fruit of piety; Break up for yourselves a new field, for it is time to seek the LORD, till He come and rain down justice upon you.” ~ Hosea 10:12, emphasis added.
