I heard the voice of Jesus say,
Come unto Me and rest;
Lay down, thou weary one, lay down
Thy head upon My breast.
I came to Jesus as I was,
Weary and worn and sad;
I found in Him a resting place,
And He has made me glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
Behold, I freely give
The living water; thirsty one,
Stoop down, and drink, and live.
I came to Jesus, and I drank
Of that life giving stream;
My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
And now I live in Him.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
I am this dark world’s Light;
Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise,
And all thy day be bright.
I looked to Jesus, and I found
In Him my star, my sun;
And in that light of life I’ll walk,
Till traveling days are done.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
My Father’s house above
Has many mansions; I’ve a place
Prepared for you in love.
I trust in Jesus—in that house,
According to His word,
Redeemed by grace, my soul shall live
Forever with the Lord.

1.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,

“Come unto me and rest;

Lay down, thou weary one, lay down

Thy head upon my breast.”

I came to Jesus as I was,

So weary, worn and sad;

I found in him a resting place,

And he has made me glad.

2.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,

“Behold, I freely give

The living water; thirsty one,

Stoop down, and drink, and live.”

I came to Jesus, and I drank

Of that lifegiving stream;

My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,

And now I live in him.

3.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,

“I am this dark world’s light;

Look unto me, thy morn shall rise,

And all thy day be bright.”

I looked to Jesus, and I found

In him my star, my sun;

And in that light of life I’ll walk

Till traveling days are done.

Verse 1
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Come unto me and rest;
Lay down, O weary one, lay down
Your head upon my breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was
So weary, worn, and sad;
I found in him a resting place
And he has made me glad.

Verse 2
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Behold, I freely give
The living water, thirsty one,
Stoop down and drink and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank
Of that life-giving stream;
My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
And now I live in him.

Verse 3
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“I am this dark world’s light;
Look unto me, your morn shall rise,
And all your day be bright.”
I looked to Jesus and I found
In Him my star, my sun;
And in that light of life I’ll walk
Till traveling days are done.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
  “Come unto Me, and rest;
Lay down, thou weary one, lay down
  Thy head upon My breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was,
  Weary, and worn, and sad;
I found in Him a resting-place,
  And He has made me glad.I heard the voice of Jesus say,
  “Behold, I freely give
The living water: thirsty one,
  Stoop down, and drink, and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank
  Of that life-giving stream;
My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
  And now I live in Him.I heard the voice of Jesus say,
  “I am this dark world’s Light;
Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise,
  And all thy day be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found
  In Him my Star, my Sun;
And in that Light of life I’ll walk
  Till trav’lling days are done.

What tune is I heard the voice of Jesus say?

I heard the voice of Jesus say (based on Matthew 11: 28) was written in 1846, during what must have been an intensely stressful and painful time for Bonar himself in the immediate years after the 1843 schism. The tune Kingsfold is an old English folksong of uncertain origin and date.

Who wrote I heard the voice of Jesus say?

Horatius Bonar (1808-1889) was a Scottish minister and hymn writer who moved to the Free Church after the Disruption of 1843 and became Moderator of the General Assembly of that Church.

What does it mean to hear the voice of Jesus?

Sometimes it's a sense of peace or joy that covers your body in a moment of chaos. Sometimes it's wisdom in a situation. And sometimes God speaks to you for your, for what you're going through, sometimes He speaks to you for someone else, sometimes He just shares things that He wants you to pray about.
