Can a student open a checking account?

Whether you’re a minor in middle school or high school, or an adult in college, you can open a checking account at Huntington.

Keep in mind that if you’re under the age of 18, you must apply for a checking account in-person with a co-signer or joint account holder that is over the age of 18. The co-signer or joint account holder doesn’t need to be a legal guardian but will be contractually obligated on the account. If you’re 18 or older, you can open a checking account online or in-branch without a co-signer.

Apply In-Branch

If you prefer to open your checking account in-person, visit your local Huntington branch during business hours. Make sure you bring your chosen forms of identification (your Social Security Number, driver’s license, or passport) and if you’re under the age of 18, bring your co-signer or joint account holder that’s over 18. If you have any questions, our bankers are more than happy to help answer your questions.

Student Checking FAQs

What’s the difference between a checking and savings account?

Answer:

Checking accounts allow quick access to your funds on a day-to-day basis, and some checking accounts are interest bearing. Savings accounts have withdrawal limits, are interest bearing, and are typically used for storing money long term.

It's useful to have both a checking and a savings account in order to keep your money secure, have quick access and save over time.
