I got myself a Google Voice Number when it first came out because I was eager to see how it worked and whether it was any good. It was free, after all.

Unfortunately, I had listed this personal number on my business page, and soon I was swamped with family and friends and clients and vendors on the same number.

I would be remiss if I didn’t admit that I did mix up a call or two as a result.

Some would call it a rookie mistake, but honestly, I was not the best at handling multiple phone numbers, each assigned a specific purpose.

That is when a trusted acquaintance told me about consolidating different phone numbers to a single Google Voice account.

Turns out with the magic of call forwarding, I could text, call and access voicemail on one device while using multiple numbers.

So during my research on Google Voice, I came across various methods to get multiple numbers on one account and weighed the benefits of each.

Finally, I put together this article with everything I’d learnt so that you can find a ready reference guide with all the solutions in one place.

You can get a second number on your Google Voice account for free if you activate the new number as a different phone type, such as “Home,” and assign your original number to “Mobile.”

Now there are other methods to acquire and use multiple numbers on your Google Voice account.

Some incur a small fee in exchange for additional convenience, while others provide a more comprehensive solution for linking new numbers to the same account.

Read on to explore the possibilities and learn about how you can get multiple numbers on Google Voice.

Why Would you Want a Second Google Voice Number?

Google Voice is among the premium VoIP services available in the country right now that doesn’t require a subscription.

I’ve found the call audio quality pretty impeccable, and tell me why you wouldn’t want to make calls over your regular internet connection?

Moreover, the best part about Google Voice is how you can link another number in one Google Voice account and use them interchangeably.

The user experience is seamless, as you can trust Google to deliver a pretty UI with regular patch updates and a singular clean ecosystem for all your personal and business call needs.

We went from using five different cellphones to managing them all in one place. But, you don’t need to take my word for it.

Take a look at the benefits that you get with a second Google Voice number:

  • Free calling and texting cover the US and Canada, so you don’t need a new number on a business trip or vacation (a few specific phone numbers incur a 1 cent per minute cost).
  • Multiple phone numbers become manageable using a single Google Voice account in one phone.
  • All your voicemails are available on a single device.
  • Avail of call recording features on your Google Voice number

Now, of course, the question arises – how do you get a second number? I’ll break down the entire process and tell you what you should and should not do.

Phone Number Type Hack to Get Another Number

The most effortless workaround to getting a new Google Voice number is switching up the “phone types” on your Google account.

Google offers three phone types for three different numbers that you can forward to your phone. The types are:

  • Home
  • Mobile
  • Work

Hence, you need to apply for a number under a different type to get another Google Voice number.

Although, you may run into some issues if your home number is already listed as “Mobile.”

When you try to acquire a second cell phone number as “Mobile,” it removes the existing house number and prompts a warning through email.

So when you apply for a new number, make sure to select “Home” in this case as phone type and validate it.

You will be using Google accounts and authentication throughout the process while picking up your second number.

How to Add Another Number to your Google Voice Account

Once you have a second number ready, you need to add it to your Google Voice account.

It’s a relatively standard procedure, and you do not need extensive technical knowledge to proceed.

Moreover, you can do it from your Android device, iPhone, or even PC.

Here are the standard steps to follow:

  1. Open your Google account and navigate to Google Voice settings.
  2. Now navigate to “Account,” then “Linked Numbers,” and click on the “New Linked Number” option.
  3. Now enter the new number from the previous section to add it to your Google Voice account.
  4. It triggers a text alert with a verification link and code to that number automatically.
  5. Open the link that leads to another pop-up window and enter the code received on the number.

Now your second number is activated and linked to your existing Google Voice account.

If you are looking to add a number that is not a cellphone number, you also can choose call verification instead of text.

When you choose the call option, you should receive a call within 30 seconds where an automated recording reads out the verification code for you.

Then you can move to enter the code in the following pop-up window on your device to link the second number to your account.

Permanently Retain your First Google Voice Number with a One-Time Fee

Google allows you to keep your existing number along with the new number, but it has a few caveats.

For instance, you can retain it as a secondary number, which comes for a small price of $20.

However, you get all the benefits of call forwarding as you can receive calls, voicemails, and texts on a single number.

Before we get into the procedure, please note that you need to fulfill the one-time payment within 90 days of picking your second number.

Now with the advisories out of the way, here are the steps to follow:

  1. Run Google Voice on your browser.
  2. Look for Menu (three horizontally stacked bars) on the top left corner of the window, and go to Legacy Google Voice.
  3. Navigate to the Settings (gear icon) menu on the new window at the top right corner.
  4. On the Phone tab, look for your original number and click “Make Permanent” beside it.
  5. Now proceed according to the on-screen instructions until the payment option appears.

On successful payment, the expiration date next to your Google Voice number disappears.

Also, remember that your outbound texts and calls will happen through your main Google Voice number.

It means the recipients will see your second number since the original one is now secondary.

Get a Google Fiber Number Instead

If you are keen on using your original Google Voice number as your secondary, there are two alternatives available:

  • You can get a new Google Fiber phone number.
  • Add a user to your existing Google Fiber Phone account.

Before we navigate how to get a new Google Fiber number, we need to clarify why it holds an advantage over the regular Google Voice service.

Google Fiber allows you to share the Fiber phone service with others, supporting up to two additional users (which can also be your second number).

Each user can retain a unique phone number along with a ringtone, voicemail, etc.

So, it does not consolidate all three numbers to a single one by call forwarding, which makes it ideal for a family telephone plan.

Now Google Fiber uses Hangouts to make and receive calls on your cell phone or home landline.

Here is what you need to do to get a new Google Fiber number:

  1. Use your Google account to sign in to the Google Fiber page.
  2. Click on ‘Manage Plan’ under Plan Details
  3. Navigate to the ‘Subscribe to Additional Services’ header under the Overview tab, and click on “Add to Plan” right next to “Phone.”
  4. Select the new number you want to use from the list, and proceed to set up your Google Fiber phone.

Now, here’s a limitation of getting a new Google Fiber is that it automatically releases any existing Google Voice numbers you have on your Google account for good.

Yes, you cannot get back the lost Google Voice number.

So if you want to retain the original number and get a new Google Fiber line, it is best to use a separate Google account for the two.

Create Another Google Voice Account

So far, I have extensively discussed different approaches to acquiring a second Google Voice account. But I saved the simplest one for last.

Conventionally, one Google account is linked to a single Google Voice number.

Hence, the obvious way to get a second number is using a second Google account.

Moreover, it’s free and does not involve a lot of hassle.

You can make a new account by visiting Google’s Accounts Page.

Install the Google Voice App

With our new Google account, we shall move on to installing the Google Voice app.

I recommend the app as a convenient solution to manage your numbers, preferences, and devices in one place.

The Google Voice app is available on both the Play store and the Apple app store.

Once it’s ready, fire up the Google Voice app, and register with your new Google account.

Set Up Your Google Voice Account

Now you have a new Google account and a Google Voice account.

You are all set to acquire your new phone number:

  1. Sign in to your Google Voice account and accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Once you’re logged in, search for a new number using city or area code. The search results will return a list of available numbers. You can also search by nearby codes if your primary one does not return results.
  3. Tap on the number you want to use.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your account.

Set Up your Google Voice Account on your PC Instead

It is also possible and straightforward to set up your Google Voice account on your Desktop.

Google voice supports all the leading operating systems but not all browsers. Here is a list of compatible browsers using which you can run Google Voice:

  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Safari

Now, enter voice.google.com in the URL address bar of your chosen web browser that redirects you to the Google Voice page.

Use your google account to access your account.

Again, using the search bar, you can find available numbers based on your area or city code, similar to the app.

Once you have your preferred number, go ahead and follow the instructions to finalize it.

I understand that despite all the blog posts and guides breaking down the process to set a new Google Voice account, it leaves us with multifold queries.

So, you can always look up the numerous knowledge articles, FAQs, and support documents available at Google’s Official Support Page.

You can access the same help center using your Google Voice app or website.

The Google Voice community is also active, and you may find users such as yourself with similar questions already posted along with discussions.

Final Thoughts on Multiple Numbers on Google Voice

Google allows you to link up to six numbers to a single Google Voice number, as long as they are not already linked to another account.

Using the Google voice mobile or web app, you can also manage the devices where you want to and don’t want to receive calls or messages.

Also, you have the liberty to remove a linked number at any point in time without any expense or repercussions.
