How Do I Make Instant Pot Chicken Pasta?

Thanks to your Instant Pot, you can prepare a delicious pasta casserole with just a few minutes of prep work! To make this quick and easy dinner, just follow these four simple steps:

Step One: Sauté the Chicken

Cut the chicken breast into bite-sized pieces, then set your Instant Pot to sauté mode. Add the olive oil to the pot and allow it to heat up. When the oil is hot, add the chicken and stir to keep the meat from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Season the chicken with onion powder and pepper and sauté until the chicken is cooked through.

Step Two: Deglaze the Pot

To keep your Instant Pot from displaying a burn error while the pasta is cooking, take a minute to deglaze the pot before adding the rest of your ingredients. Turn the Instant Pot off and add the chicken broth. Use a wooden spoon to scrape the bottom of the pan to remove stuck-on pieces of chicken. Continue scraping until the bottom of the pan is clean.

Step Three: Add the Pasta

Pour the milk and sauce into the pot with the chicken, then add the pasta to the Instant Pot. Stir to combine the ingredients, making sure all the pasta is covered with liquid. Place the lid on the pot and seal the pressure valve. Set the Instant Pot to pressure cook for six minutes.

Step Four: Stir in the cheese

When the cook time is up, manually release the pressure on the pot and remove the lid. Cut the cream cheese into cubes and place the pieces into the pot. Stir to mix the cheese and help it melt in the pasta. Once the cream cheese is melted, add the parmesan cheese and stir to combine before serving.

How Much Water Do I Put in My Instant Pot for Pasta?

Cooking pasta in your Instant Pot is much different than boiling it on the stove. Instead of simply resting in the liquid, pasta cooked in a pressure cooker absorbs most of the liquid in the pot. Since your pasta will absorb the liquid in the Instant Pot as it cooks, it’s important not to put too much water in the pot.

The key is finding the right pasta to water ratio. When cooking pasta in your Instant Pot, you only need enough liquid to fully cover the pasta. If you put too much, you’ll end up with over-cooked pasta. But if you don’t put enough, some of the noodles may end up crunchy and undercooked.

This recipe uses two cups of liquid with a 12-ounce package of pasta. The use of chicken broth and milk help add flavor to the pasta while it cooks. To ensure all your pasta cooks properly in the pressure cooker, make sure to press the noodles down with your spoon so that all the pasta is covered in liquid. If it looks like you won’t have enough liquid to cover the pasta, add more chicken broth ½ cup at a time, pressing down the pasta after each addition.

How Do You Do a Manual Release on the Instant Pot?

After your recipe is finished cooking in your Instant Pot, you have two options for releasing the pressure: natural release or manual release. So, what’s the difference between the two options?

  • A natural release allows the Instant Pot to release the pressure in the pot on its own. Naturally releasing the pressure takes longer and the ingredients in the pot will continue to cook as the pressure releases. A natural release could take up to 30 minutes after the cook time is up, depending on how much liquid is in your recipe.
  • A manual release requires you to twist the pressure valve and force the pressure out of the Instant Pot. This speeds up the pressure release process and keeps your food from overcooking.

To do a manual release, start by protecting yourself. Hot steam will come out of the top of the pressure release valve, so it’s important to cover the valve to keep from burning yourself. Placing a folded kitchen towel over the top of the valve while you turn is a simple way to protect your hand.

After covering the valve, push the lever side of the valve around until the valve has loosened, making sure not to put your hand over the top of the valve. After the steam starts escaping from the top of the valve, you can carefully remove the towel and let the steam come out.

Once all the steam has been released, the red pressure indicator will go down, letting you know that it’s safe to remove the lid from the Instant Pot.
