Increased reliability and Capacity It is why 2 Militaries have chosen the 6.8 Not exactly. Ive also been face to face talking to Jordanians giving a presentation on 6.8 SAWS when I worked with Machine Gun Armory that broke apart. I do still work with the break-off company.

Question: Does a Six8 lower reciever require a Six8 upper to function, or can any other--non LWRC upper--work and function with it? Joined Jul 8, 2007 · 18,754 Posts
Question: Does a Six8 lower reciever require a Six8 upper to function, or can any other--non LWRC upper--work and function with it? Needs to have SIX8 upper, six8 pmags will not fit in upper and regular AR15 mags will not work in lower.

Ya so I bought a lower from Frontier Armory but no uppers in stock. So I can't do anything with this lower until I get an upper. You would think they would only sell them as a set, but I guess if it mix and matches with the LWRC receivers maybe? Anyways, anyone got a Frontier Armory upper they want to sell me? I would argue that evidence that further supports Yamara's account is that Barrett built their 468 with typical AR steel mag dimensions, aside from being longer to accommodate 30 rounds. They used standard uppers and lowers. HK also did the same, using their standard 5.56 uppers, lowers, gas piston system and then steel mags with updated
dimensions / followers specifically for 6.8. That gives some great insight into the history of why LWRC went with a custom receiver set and the altered PMag, but I suspect Magpul could have made a 25rd PMag in 6.8 with the same dimensions as the 30rd 556 pmags unless they bulge to much. I know for a fact my 5.56 pmags bulge out a bit when fully loaded with 30 rds in storage, so I typically follow the vickers thumb nail rule which nets me 28rds 556 and 25rd 6.8. Magpul said they could not make plastic mags for the 6.8 because the plastic would have been too thin by the time they enlarged the inside dimensions to fit the 6.8. Joined Nov 19, 2019 · 488 Posts
That explains why they made them wider and went with a 6.8 specific design. The difference in weight is very small, regardless. My Gen 2 PMags for 5.56 with the Magpod weighs 5oz empty. My ASC SS mags with adapted magpods including a screw, washer and nut weigh just 6.5 oz empty. For a standard combat load, 1.5 oz per mag * 7 = 10.5
oz extra weight. Obviously SS mag bodies are more durable and the mag catch lips don't sheer off over time (seen a few guys at training classes have that happen on occasion). Poly mags are a bit lighter and cheaper. Both are good, but I don't see poly mags as a "necessity" any longer as most of the AR mag issues were related to 1. follower design 2. worn out mag springs 3. many of the GI mags in circulation in the early 2000's were 15~20 years old!
