I have fair skin so need protection from the sun.

Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 8, 2013

I read somewhere that the best sunblock is the one you'll actually use, so, this is it. Has a pleasant, light, powdery feel. I found a knock-off brand at a drugstore with the exact same ingredients and in the exact same quantities, but, with the right deal, it's SLIGHTLY cheaper to buy the real thing on amazon. Speaking of which, the 1-pack of 45 SPF is (despite the oddly pricey shipping) the best deal among the 1 vs. 2-packs and various SPFs offered here. At my time of purchase, anyway, it came out to $2.64/oz. The 2-pack is $2.79/oz. The next cheapest is the 2-pack of 70 SPF, at $3.09/oz, and the worst is the SPF 100 1-pack or the SPF 30 1-pack (a tie, both costing $4.12/oz).

Speaking of SPF... I've read from reputable sources that once you get up to 30 or 35 or so, you're good, and the super high numbers like 100 don't necessarily provide better coverage. It's more a matter of USING it and using ENOUGH of it, so save your $. SPF 45 is definitely fine.

PS. I read somewhere that the bottles with black behind 'Neutrogena' as opposed to light blue, have some new formula that causes rashes, but I used both products (like, one on one arm, one on the other) multiple times to check that, and was glad to notice no difference. It would be sad if we could no longer count on Neutrogena.

I have fair skin that tends to burn very easily, so I am very careful about my sunscreen. I had heard great things about this sunscreen, and I originally ordered the SPF 45 on Amazon, but it never arrived. So, I ended up buying bottles of it at my local grocery store.

My initial conclusion? The sunblock was fantastic!

It wasn't too oily, as far as high SPF sunscreens go, and it absorbed into my skin within minutes, leaving a soft (almost powdery) finish. It didn't flake off or look ghastly white at SPF 45 either, though the SPF 55 did both. It did look a bit shiny, which I found strange since it felt powdery, but, honestly, most people couldn't tell I was wearing sunscreen, even though I generally caked it on.

I did notice (having purchased the SPF 55 and the SPF 45) that the higher the SPF the thicker and oiler the sunscreen got. The SPF 55 felt MUCH heavier than the SPF 45.

Unfortunately, the SPF 45 started to make my skin sting when I put it on, and the SPF 55 absolutely made my skin burn. At first, I thought it was because my skin was getting sensitive from my retinol night cream, but I tried using the sunscreen after I'd discontinued using the cream, and it still left my skin stinging and irritated. In fact, the last time I used the SPF 55, it left my skin blotchy and red for days, particularly around my eyes. The SPF 45 hasn't left my skin feeling as painful, but still leaves it sensitive to the touch and super easily irritated/irritable.

Maybe I'm just allergic or my skin doesn't agree with something in this product, but I would be careful. I haven't had this problem with other sunscreens I've used before or since, including Banana Boat and Shiseido products.

I have fair skin and try to take care of it, but I also love being in the ocean so it's difficult to find a balance. That said, I've been using this sunscreen on my face when surfing, paddling, scuba diving, or just frolicking at the shore for about 10 years. Combined with a religious skin care regimen, it's kept me looking much younger than I am for a long time. I've spent hours on the water sweating in the tropical sun without a chance to re-apply but never burn (my face...too bad my favorite body sunscreen is no longer available). Worth every penny.

It's lightweight, absorbs easily and doesn't leave a white film on your face. One drawback is that it stings a bit. Especially if you get it near your eyes, which can happen if you're in the tropics and the sweat runs down your face. That said, it didn't clog my pores and did the trick. Am buying it again, given it seems to be one of the best affordable and not overtly chemical sunscreen you can get in the US.

I've known since I was a little girl that daily sunscreen, especially on the face, is a must. Every time I have purchased a face sunscreen in the past, it was used for a maximum of three days since every one was so greasy! After paying much more for other face sunscreens I thought I'd give this one a go and I'm quite gad that I did. I apply a thin layer over my face in the morning and I'm not oily or greasy at the end of the day. Perhaps the higher SPFs give the white, chalky layer (I bought SPF 45), but so far I haven't encountered that problem.

I'm starting to care about aging. I know sun protection is the best way to fight the effects of aging and the higher the SPF the better. I already use Clinique City Block in 40 for my face but needed something for my neck,k chest and hands that didn't have any tint (city block does). This a good alternative for the price conscious and those who want to have young looking skin.

This is my go to sunscreen. Hands down. I used this the whole time I was living in Hawaii. I have very sensitive skin and this never caused a breakout or irritation. If anything, it softened my skin. It never makes my face greasy or shiny. The pricepoint on this is a little high, compared to Walmart on the mainland. But, for the convenience, this is great. Overall, this is definitely something I would recommend to others looking for a reliable sunscreen that won't cause breakouts on your face.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good sun protection but may give you an allergic reaction.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on October 27, 2016

This cream did a good job of protecting my skin this past summer, in (unusually) sunny London as well as while holidaying in a Spanish beach. No sunburnt skin whatsoever and I believe that's the main purpose of this product so a job well done in that regard.
However it has a couple of drawbacks that will make me think twice before I buy it again. It's much heavier than I expected an Ultra sheer cream to be. Not a deal breaker as you get used to it. Also don't freak out when you first apply it as it will look super white! Thankfully that only lasts a minute at most and then it becomes transparent.
Another drawback is that is not really dry-touch. Quite the contrary. It has a good hold if you sweat of bathe. It won't' run down your cheeks, but it won't feel dry either. It's a bit on the greasy side actually.
Finally it stings! If it gets into your eyes it will bun the hell out of them, so be extra careful when applying it. But it also stung the rest of my face special the skin around the eyes ( it actually feels like sunburn!). Thankfully it's not unbearable and only lasted a couple of minutes. Some people seem to have a more aggressive allergic reaction to the cream, in my case it was only a temporary burning sensation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff but no for rosacea prone faces

Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on July 17, 2019

Pluses - dries quite Matt and sheer. Obsorbs quickly, easy to both apply and reapply. Leaves a slight white cast but not a problem as I am Caspar white.
Not so great- stings a bit and might aggravate rosacea.

There’s a lot to like about this product, but maybe not so great for using on the face; I have used general sunscreens in the past formulated for general use and have had no problems, but I’m still sitting on the fence with this one. I get red bumps on my cheeks sometimes, not sure which ingredient aggravates my mild rosacea. This is annoying as it works well and l don’t have to wear any Make up to soak up oily lotions like I have in the past.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok product but causes sensitivity and I'm not sure how good it is in strong sunlight

Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on July 23, 2020

I tend to alternate sunscreens as I don't always want the same texture. This one rubs in easily (I'm very white so on a darker complexion it may need more blending/make-up over the top, I don't know). It feels nice on the skin initially but then starts to cause a slight burning sensation for me. I have quite sensitive skin so it's not uncommon for me to feel that, but I've not had it with a sunscreen before. On top of that, I have melasma (hyper-pigmentation) which has worsened while using this sunscreen. It's not caused solely by the sun so I don't want to say the sunscreen doesn;t work but you may want to bear that in mind if you have the same problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best sunscreen around

Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on April 27, 2017

This is the best sunscreen around: end of conversation. We were introduced to it by a (German) manager of a Chinese hotel, who was kind enough to give us a tube because we had forgotten ours and we have never looked back. Why so good ? It obviously does the job and stops sunburn (you don't have to have Factor 45 but we were recently in Myanmar where the strength of the sun was nearly twice the maximum in the UK) ! But the really good thing is that it is not greasy at all. It really is 'dry-touch'. You get exactly what it says on the tube. Difficult to find in the high street but VERY strongly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Caused spots and was visable to others at a distance.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on July 25, 2019

Brought me out in spots, others asked me what I was wearing on face so it doesnt absorb that well. I found sainsburys basic to be much better no breakouts and less visable and much better value. Big brands doesn't mean better.
