Peloton app apple watch heart rate not working

A major complaint in the Peloton community is that there’s no way to use the Apple Watch as a heart rate monitor. While the Bike+ has a GymKit solution (although strictly for cycling rides), the Bike, Tread, and App (iPad) all require users to rely on a secondary heart rate monitor — such as the Peloton branded chest strap for $49 — if they want to see their heart rate and zones up on the screen during their workout. So, a company called PK Fitness developed a solution called ECHO heart rate for Apple Watch as a workaround to this problem.

The ECHO app functions similarly to Zoom in that shorter sessions are free, but for longer workouts you’ll either need to start a new session or upgrade to the paid version for $14.99. Even at this price, it still feels like a bargain compared to the $50-$90 price point for decent heart rate tracking wearables.

ECHO works by collecting your watch’s heart rate data from Health and sending it to the phone which connects to the Peloton via Bluetooth. The Peloton is able to read that heart rate data and cast it onto the screen so you can see your heart rate, zones and new Strive Score in real-time. A major bonus is that by connecting using ECHO, your Apple Watch is also making progress towards your activity rings in Apple Health. However, if your Peloton already saves your workouts to Health, the PK team added an option in Settings for you to turn this feature off so you don’t get duplicate workouts.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

  1. Download ECHO on your phone and Apple Watch.
  2. Open ECHO on your phone and tap to start so it reads, ‘Waiting to connect’. In this state, ECHO will start to broadcast a bluetooth signal.
  3. On your Peloton Bike, Tread, or app, select the workout you’d like to do. On the preview screen, select ‘Heart Rate Monitor’.
  4. In the Set Up screen that pops up, connect to ‘ECHO HR: (your phone’s name)’.
  5. Within a few seconds, your Apple Watch heart rate with show up on your Peloton, phone and watch. Hit ‘Start’ on your Peloton and enjoy your workout!

P.S. They recently added zones in ECHO that correspond to the Peloton zone colors, so make sure to set your max heart rate in ECHO to match the max heart rate set on your bike/tread and enable ‘HR Zones’ in Settings. Enjoy!
