"From Dreams May We Learn, Paintings and Drawings by Rabbett Before Horses" published 2007 by the Tweed Museum of Art at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
In the forward Ken Bloom explains how the scope of the Tweed Museum's collection has expanded to the people of northern Minnesota, especially "the thriving arts of the Ojibwe communities" and in this case Rabbett Before Horses Strickland. I was very impressed and informed by the "Thoughts on Rabbet Before Horses' Pictorial Narrative" by Ken Bloom. This is a deep examination of the artist's ideology, descriptive mythical scenarios and lush visual narratives. Art explained so well is hard to find, but more than that, art of this scale and meaning is rare. Then there's an interview with Rabbett Before Horses Strickland and then the main part of the book, "Seeing Red: A Portrait of the Artist", by David Treuer, who explores deep into the artwork itself and the complex meanings of the work. He shows a deep understanding of the Native American experience and connects it to art and to this art. His narrative is intertwined with the artworks and is intense and complete. Following this main part is a brief biography. The amount of information about art and Native American Art in this book is astounding, but I was blown away before I read it, just paging through and experiencing the paintings and drawings. My favorite is "Searching for Nokomis, with its deep woods and many blues. Do you think I like this book? Now I need to see the art full size.
