Can you replace just the clutch on an AC compressor?

Yes, you can technically replace the clutch without removing the compressor. The reason people suggest doing them together is that when one fails, the other usually isn't too far behind it. It's just a matter of convenience to replace them both since you're already doing most of the same steps anyway.

How do you know if your AC clutch is going out?

The main symptoms of a bad or failing AC compressor clutch include:.
Higher Cabin Temperatures..
Loud Noises..
Clutch Stopped Moving..
Inability to Turn Air On or Off..
Leaking Refrigerant..

Can you drive with a broken AC compressor clutch?

It's not a good idea to drive with a broken A/C compressor. While you can sometimes drive your vehicle with a broken A/C compressor without needing expensive repairs, it's not wise. When these integral parts of your car's air conditioning system break, that can cause greater damage to your engine and even your health.

How do I know if my AC compressor clutch is seized?

With the car's ventilation controls set to "off," start the engine and look at the clutch/pulley assembly on the front of the compressor. The clutch should not be engaged -- the outer pulley driven by the belt should be turning, but the inner hub should not. If both are turning, the clutch is seized.
