These automotive maintenance instructions were specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2011, 2012, 2013,2014 & 2015) GM Chevrolet Cruze equipped with the Ecotec 1.4 liter turbocharged inline four cylinder engine in changing the motor oil and replacing the cartridge style oil filter.

Owners of other General Motors vehicles equipped with the Ecotec 1.4L Turbo engine such as the Chevy Sonic, Opel Astra J, Meriva B and Zafira Tourer may also find this DIY oil change tutorial to be useful.

A few compatible replacement cartridge oil filters with their part numbers include the following: ACDelco PF2257G, Pennzoil PZ-171, Fram CH10246, Wix 57674, Hastings LF643, Valvoline VO-98, Champion COC10246 and K&N PS-7027.

The tools required to complete this procedure include a floor jack, jack stands, a 10mm socket, a 24mmsocket, a 1/4" and 1/2" drive ratcheting wrenches, a used oil catch container, a new oil filter, an automotive funnel and 5 quarts of new SAE 5W-30 oil.

Oil Drain Bolt Location
The first three steps are to warm up the engine for a few minutes, park the vehicle on a level surface and then turn off the engine.

Engage the emergency / parking brake and chock the rear wheels to prevent the car from moving.

Then pop open the hood, twist off the oil filler cap in the counter clockwise direction and lift up the yellow handled dipstick a few inches.

Removing the oil filler cap and pulling up the dipstick will help prevent a vacuum from forming and allow the old oil to drain out more quickly.

Raise the front passenger side of the vehicle with the floor jack and securely support it with the two jack stands.

Slide under the car with your used oil catch basin, 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratcheting wrench.

Drain Out Old Oil
The oil drain bolt is located at the rear of the grey metal oil pan next to the exhaust pipe.

Slide the used oil catch container to just below the drain bolt.

Loosen the oil drain bolt with the 10mm socket and ratcheting wrench by turning it counter clockwise.

Be careful when you spin out the drain bolt since the old oil may be hot enough to burn your skin depending on how long you warmed up the engine in the first step.

Allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes or until the flow slows to an occasional drip.

Re-insert the oil drain bolt and spin it in by hand a few turns to prevent it from becoming cross threaded.

Tighten the bolt to just past hand tight or about 14 Nm (~10 Ft lbs) of torque with the 10mm socket and ratcheting wrench.

Double check that the oil drain bolt is tight before moving on to the next steps.

Black Plastic Filter Cap
The oil filter element is accessed from the top of the engine, so you can lower the vehicle from the jack stands.

The black plastic oil filter housing is located on the right (driver) side of the engine near the oil filler hole and below some hoses.

I recommend buying the OEM GM ACDelco PF2257Goil filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon.

Attach the 24mmsocket to the 1/2" drive ratcheting wrench and place it on the hex head on the oil filter cap.

Loosen the oil filter cap by turning it counter clockwise and then spin it out by hand.

Be careful, since some oil will drip out when you remove the oil filter.

Spin On Cap With New Filter

Torque To 18.5 Ft Lbs
Pull the old filter out of the cap and discard it.

Pry the old rubber o-ring off the cap and push the new o-ring down to the bottom of the threads.

Dip your pinky finger in some new oil and lightly lubricate the o-ring. Lubricating the o-ring will help it form a better seal and make it easier to remove the cap at the next oil change.

Snap the new cartridge filter in to the bottom of the cap and spin the cap back on to the engine.

Tighten the cap with the 24mm socket by turning it clockwise to just past hand tight or about 25 Nm (~18.5 Ft lbs) of torque.

Do not over tighten the filter cap to prevent from cracking the plastic housing.

Double Check Oil Filter Cap

Insert Automotive Funnel

Pour In New 5W-30 Oil
Double check that the oil filter cap is tight before continuing.

Insert the automotive funnel in to the oil filler hole and only pour in about 3.5 to 4 quarts of new SAE 5W-30 oil.

Both the 1.4L Turbo and 1.8L Cruze engine's have an oil capacity specification of 4.25 US quarts (4.0 liters) for an oil change with filter replacement.

It is far better to have slightly less oil than necessary in an engine than to have too much.

Temporarily replace the oil filler cap and push the dipstick back in place.

Run the engine for a few minutes, shut if off, and allow the engine to rest for 5-10 minutes so that the oil drains back down to the pan.

Check Engine Oil Level
2013 chevy cruze oil filter socket size

Replace Dipstick
Pull out the dipstick, wipe it off, re-insert it and pull it out again to check the engine oil level.

Slowly add in more oil and repeatedly check the dipstick until the level reaches at or near the top of the cross hatched area.

You may not need to pour in the entire 4.25 quarts of new oil depending on how long you allowed the old oil to drain out.

Once the oil level is correct, tighten the oil filler cap in the clockwise direction and push in the dipstick.

To reset the engine oil life percentage and make the "Change Engine Oil Soon" message go away, first press the DIC Menu button until "Remaining Oil Life" is displayed. Then press the "Set" button, choose "Yes" to reset the oil life and press the "Set / Clear" button to confirm the change. The oil life remaining should now be 100%.

Be sure to record the oil change in your service records. It's also a good idea to check your driveway or garage during the next few days for drops of oil that may indicate a leak from the drain bolt or filter housing.
