It’s not unheard of for a side mirror cover to take a beating. Perhaps from the weather, another vehicle, or road debris. Sometimes they end up with a crack or two. The cover’s purpose is to protect the electrical and mechanical components inside the side mirror assembly. A broken cover can cause problems down the road.

Is It Possible To Replace Only The Cover?

The good news is that you don’t necessarily have to replace the entire assembly if your Mazda has a broken side mirror cover. You just have to check your assembly to see if it’s in good working order first.

All that being said, replacing just the cover may not be the best option for you. It’s a more complicated task than it sounds. We’ll elaborate on that under the “cons” subheading below. Let’s talk about the pros first:

There are two major advantages to replacing just the cover:

1. Cost: A single side mirror cover is much cheaper than an entire side mirror assembly. For example, a replacement side mirror assembly for a 2017 CX-3 costs $70-$80 more than a replacement side mirror cover. However, replacing the cover comes with hidden costs, which we’ll discuss soon. This opens up the possibility of a cover replacement costing the same as a full assembly replacement.
2. More options: Mazda offers OEM replacement side mirror covers in a variety of colors and finishes. You can select one that’s different from your original cover to give your Mazda that custom look.

The Cons Of Replacing The Side Mirror Cover

Replacing the cover sounds easy, but there are actually several factors to take into consideration. You might end up not wanting to go through the trouble to just replace the cover for the following reasons: 

1. Limited options: There are OEM covers available in a limited number of standard Mazda body paint colors, such as meteor gray, crystal white, and dynamic blue. If you drive a Mazda with an uncommon color, you might have a hard time finding a replacement cover that matches. The good news is that Mazda offers black plastic OEM covers that can be painted to match the body of the vehicle. However, it can make the entire project quite time-consuming.
2. Possibly costly and/or time-consuming: Painting your side mirror cover takes a lot of time and preparation. You also have to spend money on paint and tools if you paint it yourself. Or you have to pay a body shop.
3. Imperfect factory look: After everything is said and done, the paint might not exactly match the body of your vehicle.
4. Possibly difficult: Some Mazda side mirrors are complicated. Sometimes it's faster to replace the whole assembly than it is to take apart the mirror and replace the cover.
