Miniature Dachshund History

The Miniature Dachshund originated in Germany 600 years ago where they were commonly known as badger dog. They were specifically bred with a size and purpose that they could easily fit into smaller spaces and dug holes to hunt for badgers and other small animals. Throughout the history of this breed, breeders continued to raise and breed dachshund in different sizes to hunt different animals such as foxes, deers, hares, and weasels. Aside from being a hunter dog, the miniature dachshund were developed with traits that describe them as fearless, clever, agile, and bold. They were known for their loud barks to alert their owners of their location as they dig and find. To this day, dachshunds have retained these qualities. It is only during the 1800s that dachshunds were bred to become as pets than hunters. Like most popular breeds, they have also caught the attention of the royalty in Great Britain and have developed a fondness for this breed. As years went by, the sizes of the original dachshund was greatly reduced until they were able to breed a miniature dachshund. To this day, the miniature dachshund continues to be one of the most popular breeds for pet owners.

Often described as clever, energetic, independent, and sometimes, even a bit stubborn due to its perseverance. Miniature Dachshunds have been known to be courageous and entertaining. Once they develop their trust for their owners, they can be loving pets that enjoy cuddles. They typically have a friendly and lively personality that anyone can instantly fall in love with. Similar to other dogs, the way they are brought up can affect their temperament and social skills as they grow older. Make sure to expose your puppy to other dogs, children, and other people, so they can get used to their presence. Once they get to meet all sorts of people and experience different things as they grow, they will become a well-rounded Miniature Dachshund that will get along well with you, your other family members, and other pets.

Miniature Dachshund Size

A Miniature Dachshund stands at an average height of 5-6 inches and weighs around 11 pounds or less. They can easily spotted with their elongated body, short stature, long snout, and droopy ears. They also come in a various of colours or a combination of black, cream, tan, brown, fawn, brindle, and chocolate.

How to Care Miniature Dachshund Puppies: Grooming & Basic Needs

A Miniature Dachshund has different coats such as smooth, wirehaired, or longhaired. They are generally a low-maintenance breed that does not shed excessively. Bad odour rarely sticks on to their fur unless they deliberately roll around in something foul-smelling. They can be bathed weekly and are easy to clean in-between baths. Depending on the type of coat your dachshund has, the frequency of brushing its fur varies. For longhaired dachshunds, they require brushing a few times a week to prevent tangles and mats. For shorthaired dachshunds, they need brushing once a week while the wirehaired dachshund need their mane to be groomed to an ideal length with weekly brushing. For their living needs, they adapt well to most homes no matter the size. It is ideal that they stay inside rather than living outdoors.

Similarly with other dog breeds, their nails, teeth, ears, and eyes need to be checked, maintained, and cleaned. Smaller breeds are more prone to dental problems, so it’s best to brush their teeth regularly to avoid tartar and bacteria build up. Be sure to check your pup’s skin for any signs of infection, sores, or rashes.

Miniature Dachshund Common Health Condition / Training / Nutrition

Miniature Dachshund are known for their energy, liveliness, and stamina. They require a bit of an active daily routine to keep them happy and healthy. They will always be down for a walk, play games or go outside to explore if you have a backyard, where they will most likely be in tune with their hunting instincts and start digging and hunting. Typically, a miniature dachshund’s lifespan is 12-16 years. They are a generally healthy breed, but can be prone to diseases or injuries if not well taken care of such as back problems, ear infections, diabetes, etc.

When it comes to training, they can be motivated to learn and pick up tricks with consistent use of positive reinforcement or treats. Sometimes, they can be a bit stubborn, so it’s best to be patient with them. They thrive under different sorts of training and exercises that can stimulate their minds and keep their attention.

Provide your miniature dachshund with a properly balanced diet daily and be sure to give them fresh water every day. If you are unsure of the amount or if you are looking for a feeding recommendation, be sure to consult with you vet. Be careful not to overfeed or give them too much treats since they are prone to weight gain.
