Overview

Important:

Zoom requires you to update your software if it's more than nine months behind the current version. If your version of Zoom software is older than nine months, you will be blocked from joining meetings until you upgrade. For help, see Upgrading Zoom to the latest version. Updating your client frequently allows you to take advantage of available features and to resolve potential issues. For more, see Zoom Release Notes.

To join a Zoom meeting, you must first have Zoom installed on your device, and then provide the meeting's unique 10- or 11-digit ID.

These instructions provide information on installation options, and step-by-step instructions for joining a Zoom meeting with your Zoom at IU account.

If you're in a meeting room with videoconferencing equipment and won't be using your own device, see Connect to Zoom from a videoconferencing room.

Install Zoom on a laptop, desktop, or mobile device

You have the following options for connecting to Zoom:

  • Zoom client for meetings (recommended): Download the Zoom client for your Windows, macOS, or Linux computer.

View a video about installing and updating the Zoom desktop client.

  • Zoom mobile app: You can download the Zoom mobile app for your iOS or Android device from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
  • Zoom Launcher plug-in: To connect to a Zoom meeting from Chrome, Firefox, or Safari without downloading the Zoom client, see Launching Zoom from a web browser. The Zoom Launcher plug-in will install the Zoom client on first use.

    Note:

The Skype for Business and Outlook plug-ins require the Zoom client.

  • Skype for Business plug-in: Launch Zoom meetings from your Skype for Business contact list (as a host only). Keep in mind that participants dialing into your Zoom meeting from Skype for Business will not have access to advanced sharing features (for example, whiteboard, PowerPoint sharing, chat, and voting). Participants needing access to advanced features should use the Zoom client. For more, see Skype for Business/Lync Integration (for participants) and Zoom Skype for Business (Lync) Plugin (for hosts).
  • Outlook plug-in/add-in: To schedule and start Zoom meetings directly from Outlook, download the Outlook plug-in from the Zoom Download Center. For more, see Microsoft Outlook plugin (desktop). If you're on macOS, use the Zoom for Outlook add-in instead of the plug-in.

Be aware that calendar sharing in Zoom won't have the same permissions as in Outlook; you'll likely want to test editing and revising meetings using the plug-in.

Join a meeting with your Zoom at IU account

Note:

Before hosting or joining a meeting, join a test meeting to test your internet connection, audio, and video. Be sure to test your Zoom meeting with the device you intend to connect or host from (such as videoconferencing equipment). If you wish to test connecting to a meeting from videoconferencing equipment, you will need to create and host a meeting to join first, as meetings cannot be hosted from videoconferencing equipment.

  1. Sign into your Zoom account.

While it is possible to join a Zoom meeting as a guest, UITS recommends that you sign into Zoom with your IU account before joining a meeting, for a more secure meeting experience.

    • Through the Zoom desktop application:
      1. Open Zoom, and select .
      2. Type in the meeting ID, and set your join options. Select . If the host has password-protected the meeting, you will be prompted to enter it. Then, if the host has enabled the waiting room, you'll be placed in it before you are admitted into the meeting.
