The residency program in Family Practice at Medical City Fort Worth, formerly called Plaza Medical Center in Fort Worth trains physicians to manage a majority of the clinical problems seen in a family practice clinic. The program is dually accredited by the American College of Osteopathic (AOA) Family Physicians and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

The training includes all elements stated in the Basic Standards for Training in Family Medicine. Residents will learn to evaluate, manage a wide variety of medical problems regardless of diagnosis, gender, age of the patient or severity of illness, while adhering to the standards of care in a model family practice setting. Residents will have the opportunity to learn common inpatient procedure such as Central line placement, Ventilator management, Intubations and common outpatient procedures such as Exercise stress test, EKG, Spirometry, Ankle Branchial index, Office Ultrasound, Joint injection, Soft tissue injection, IUD insertion, Colposcopy, Endometrial Biopsy, Nexplanon insertion, Skin biopsy, Minor office surgery, Audiogram, Tympanogram, and Osteopathic manipulative treatment.

The program length is 36 months consist of 39-4 week clinical and educational blocks with focus on both inpatient and outpatient setting. The training occurs in hospitals, model ambulatory clinic, community health centers, and private offices of the attending physician. Ambulatory clinical training will take place at a model family practice clinic, equipped with Electronic Health Record and located in Fort Worth, Texas and an easy 15-minute commute to the training Hospital for residents and patients. The ambulatory clinic experience will provide the resident with a continuing care exposure to a panel of private and government assisted patients. A core of full time board‐certified family physician faculty supervises all the resident’s clinical encounters. First- year residents (interns) will spend one half‐day per week in the ambulatory clinic. PGY2 and PGY3 residents will spend on average four half‐days in the family practice clinic. The interns and resident’s skills and knowledge will be evaluated using an AOA and ACGME approved competency based evaluation system. Resident inputs will be use to improve the program. Residents will have the opportunity to receive a certificate of achievement upon successful completion of a minimal additional curriculum in Geriatric Medicine in a collaboration with John Peter Smith Geriatric fellowship, UNTHSC department of Geriatric and Medical City Fort Worth.

The residency program is constructed around the following tenants of training:

  1. A well‐designed and measurable curriculum of specified clinical experiences.
  2. Exposure to model family physician and behavioral scientist faculty.
  3. Active participation in core clinical rotations and feedback regarding performance.
  4. Assessment of skills and knowledge using competency based evaluations.
  5. Clinical experiences augmented by didactic conferences and independent staff
