What can the stocker in my 96 Z handle before I burn it out? Summer '07 I'm tentatively planning a cam swap with ported heads and full bolt ons with ~400-450 flywheel with 3.73's out back and maybe a stall if the money is available.

Really I'm just kinda wondering whether or not I can do the head and cam work without toastin my transmission. The 10-bolt I'll worry about killing later, but mainly I'm concerned about the $1500 slushbox that I want to put 400+ hp through and whether or not it can handle it stock or if I need to hold off on power until I can build the transmission some.

Yeah they definitley are not indestructible. My 4L60e is on it's 3rd rebuild this very moment and I haven't even had it at the track yet. When I bought the car it was pretty much stock. I had it built to last and could hold around 600hp with all the goodies you can think of and the labor was done perfectly so no question there, yet I have still broken parts that are just weak points in the transmission even with the upgraded parts.

If you do get a cam and do upgrade the motor, be ready to dish out for a good stall converter or else the stock one won't last.

In stock form they can take some hard hits, but just not for very long. Make at lot of passes and it'll fail. However if they are built right, they can still handle a lot of power and last a long time. About 75% of failures I hear about are from people either abusing the transmission or it being built incorrectly, which in both cases are not the fault of the 4L60E's design.

well it all depands with how you drive the car. my transmission took a crap on me a month a go but i had a non lock up 3000 stall in it so thats why it craped out on me. it depands on how many miles on the transmission, but let me tell my bolt on car with a stall when i had the stock transmission would hit the limiter didnt shift for crap.now its a whole new car with the freddy brown built 4l60e.

factory 4l60e's are good transmission and can handle some punishment, problem is when they do finally give out these builders at everyday trani shops go get the cheapest rebuild kits possile throw it together and stick you with a 1500$ bill. do the cam and head combo and put a hayden cooler on your trani. (40$ on ebay) then later if the trani explodes do the rebuild right. i've preached to many about the 4l60e rebuilds and the crappy parts rebuilders put in them. use heavy duty versions of the common failures of the 4l60e ( clutches, steels, bands, sun gear, servo) throw a shift kit and nice converter on it and be sure you have a huge trani cooler and be ready for 500 hp ready auto.

as for the rear end autos have a better chance of not blowing rear ends so don't worry about it until first after the motor work is done and the trani later pops and is rebuilt. because if you rebuild the auto right it's gunna bite gears extremely hard and will more than likely leave your rear end unhappy
