battery charger image by Albert Lozano from Fotolia.com The Everstart battery charger is a device designed to charge and replenish a dead car battery so that it can be used again. This may help you at home if you cannot get your car started, though it will probably not be much help on the road, since the battery charger requires an outlet to function. Following instructions while charging is important to avoid damage to the battery or injury to yourself. PreparationCar batteries can spit or leak acidic solutions, and can sometimes explode or spark, so wearing protective clothing and glasses is advisable. Be sure to read the owner's manual of both the battery charger and your car model to find out more information on how to treat the battery. Set the volt setting on the battery charger to "12 volts." Almost all car batteries are 12 volts; if yours is not, then set the charger on the correct voltage--most Everstart chargers have options for multiple voltage types; but if not, do not use a 12-volt charger on a battery than is not 12 volts. You may also be able to choose the amp setting for the battery. This setting determines how quickly the charge will be passed on into the battery, and should be set as low as possible. A slow charge will take much longer, but will charge the battery much more effectively. ChargingMake sure the charger is off and unplugged. Attach the red alligator clip to the red (positive) terminal of the battery, then place the black alligator clip on the engine frame as far away from the battery as possible. Set the charger as far from the battery as it can go, then plug it in. If the charger has an "On/Off" switch, turn it on and begin the charging process. Wait the correct amount of time, which is generally several hours--refer to your specific charger manual for more detailed instructions on how long to wait. Most Everstart chargers have indicators that should be carefully monitored to help you know when charging is complete. Be sure to unplug the charger before you remove the battery clips, taking off the black (negative) clip first and the red (positive) clip second.
