Q: Front end makes a grinding noise when I turn. Is that something to do with the rack and pinion steering?
I'm getting a grinding noise from the front end when I'm turning to the left. The faster and sharper the turn, the louder the noise. If I do a slow gradual turn the noise is almost not noticeable It's happening, it sounds like, from the right front end. I do not hear it when going over small bumps and railroad tracks, so I do not think ( I am guessing) it's from the suspension. Plus it is not very noticeable when I turn to the right

Hi there. The noise sounds like the wheel hub bearings are grinding as you are turning. Lift up the vehicle and put all the wheels off the ground and spin the front wheels. Listen and feel the wheels for any weird sounds and grinding feeling. If there is a feeling and grinding sound, then the hub bearings will need replaced. If the front wheels do not have the sound, then either the CV shaft has a bad ball bearing and needs replaced or the transmission has a grinding gear within the transmission. I own an 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited (AWD). It has ~155,000 miles on it.
About a month and a half ago I started hearing a rubbing noise (I hesitate to use grinding because it is a 'deeper' noise not high pitched). It sounds pretty central to the front end. It starts the second the wheels move and the thrumming of the noise is synced with speed. It isn't affected by turning. I've had a bit of front end vibration and the past two days I've noticed it more at highway speeds. It is a very light, quick, vibration that can be felt through the steering wheel.
I had it taken in three weeks ago for an oil change and tire rotation, and the tech said I desperately needed new rotors and brake pads. I had a second opinion done and ended up getting new front end rotors and all four brakes replaced. I had mentioned the weird noise at both inspections and they said it was likely the brakes.
Well, the noise is still there, which is why I'm here. In my head I'm seeing metal shavings of some expensive part all over the place.
When we first bought it used at ~40,000 miles, we ended up getting the front differential replaced. I know what that floorboard thrumming sounds like and this is definitely more forward in the vehicle and more grind-y.
