Jeep xj 3 inch lift 31s

Three years ago, I dropped $1,000 on a lift kit for my daily-driver, a 1992 Jeep Cherokee. And while I initially loved the way it turned out, I’ve grown to detest almost everything about my new suspension. Lifting my daily driver was a dumb idea.

  • English

The main reason I lifted my Jeep was because it was starting to look a bit pathetic with its saggy rear leaf pack, heavily-scratched paint, rusty rocker panels, and off-color driver’s side fender. I figured I could lift the Jeep out of its Pathetic Old Junker status and turn it into something actually kinda badass, and I think I was right. Look at that muscular stance. Those beefy 31-inch tires. All that extra ground clearance for off-roading. It is beautiful.

But I had to sacrifice a crap-ton for that look, and in retrospect, it totally wasn’t worth it. Never mind the initial $1,000 price tag for all the parts, or the days of labor trying to remove rusty upper shock bolts and leaf spring eye bolts. Never mind trying to cure driveline vibrations, or adjusting the track bar to keep the 31s from rubbing.

Never mind all that. What I do mind, however, is when I’m headed home on a quiet night after a long day and BAM, I hit an expansion joint. Two seconds later: BAM, I ran over a grasshopper. A second later: BAM, I ran over an endoplasmic reticulum. Three seconds later: BAM, I ran over a fermion.

G/O Media may get a commission

You get the point: the ride quality is abysmal, even with my Bilstein 5100 shocks. And that’s the issue with a lot of these lift kits, including my relatively-pricey Rubicon Express one: the springs are often too damn stiff.

Of course, my peril doesn’t end with just poor ride quality. The handling also got much worse thanks to the higher center of gravity, the braking got a crap-ton worse thanks to the larger diameter tires, and my god, the acceleration. This Jeep’s grunty four-liter motor makes 190 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque, which was great with the original 215 75 R15 tires. But with the 31s and factory 3.55 gearing, the Jeep is now downright slow. And that makes me sad.

Wind noise is also up, thanks to more exposed suspension parts, steering parts now wear out faster, and fuel economy is drastically reduced. I used to score about 19 MPG highway, and now I’m at about 14 or 15. That’s almost a 20 percent reduction in mileage because of four inches of lift, and three-inches of extra tire diameter.

As someone who drives total shitboxes regularly, you’d think I’d be comfortable in a loud, inefficient, poor handling, poor braking, slow vehicle. And I totally am. But in this case, looking at the data, this lift kit just wasn’t worth it.

If this weren’t just a grocery-store runabout, but instead an actual off-road rig, maybe I’d say it was worth it. But I’ve got a purpose-built green Jeep XJ at home that I’m not at all afraid to hammer on off-road. As such, this red Jeep rarely sees mud or rocks, rendering my lift kit all but useless, and the negative consequences of the install all the more annoying.

I kinda just want my old springs back. But man that rear three-quarter profile. Whew, it makes me weak.

3 inch lift with 31s...what to trim?

I put a zone 3" lift on my XJ and stuffed 31s on it yesterday and they rub on full turn. Where does everyone recommend I begin for trimming? It's obvious where the rubbing is occurring but I don't necessarily want to just start hacking at my bumper trim..I don't want to make it look like a bad hack job. What have others done with a 3 inch lift and 31s?

4" on 33x10.50's
What I did here was traced around the flares and cut out them

3" on 31x10.50's with less trimming
Cut and folded the front the same as the rear, much stronger and doesn't vibrate with the wind

fully stuffed before I bump stopped it.

Are you wanting to keep the flares or remove them?

I'd really like to keep my flares if possible.

I just saw this thread which I may end up doing:

Simple solution, remove the Bumper end caps. More complex, trim the end caps, bumpstop correctly. Even MORE complex, you can trim your fenders a bit and keep the stock flares, just measure carefully.

The more research I do I think it may have to do with the backspacing on the wheels. The wheels in the pic have 3-5/16 backspacing, Zone recommends 3.5"-4"...my black soft 8s that I plan on using are a 4" backspacing...I think that'll take care of my issue. It'll push the wheels back in 3/4 of an inch or so.

The OP said the tires rub on full turn. That sounds like rubbing on the lower control arm(s) more than the fender. I had this problem with 31's which was solved by swapping in ZJ LCA's. You can also put washers on your steering stops but I never liked the idea of limiting my minimum turning radius.

No, they definitely don't rub on the LCAs...it's all bumper and fender.

I believe you mean, WJ LCA's, as ZJ are the same as XJ

Re: 3 inch lift with 31s...what to trim?

When I ran a 3.5" lift on 31's on my firstT XJ, I fixed my LCA rubbing with Soft 8's with the 4" b/s. You can achieve similar results with wheel spacers if you love your rims and don't want to swap.

I also removed the front end caps (before swapping for new bumper) to prevent rubbing. I also removed all inner plastic and relocated my horns.

You can buy some additional space with upper coil isolators. I'm currently running some OME isolators in addition to my stock ones and they fit together well and provide a bit of additional space. ACOS would be a great way to dial in the needed space, especially after you add bumper, winch, and 50 lbs of beer weight.

As always, bump stop as needed. Hocky pucks are cheap and easy.

I'm definitely gonna start with putting my soft 8s on first. I only have these mickey thompsons on because they already have the tires mounted on them...I can easily dismount one and do a test fit on the soft 8s.

Look at where it's rubbing and trim it. Or, smash your tires into the fenders and cut off all the dented metal, like I did. But if you're worried about appearances, I wouldn't recommend that...unless you take more care than I did to cut straight.

I'm hoping to avoid using spacers...I'm first going to try a wheel with a different backspacing.

I agree with you to try a different wheel: I have a similar lift, stock wheels and 31's on my 87. No problems.

Will 31s fit on a stock XJ?

4.3L XJ said: 30" is usually the tallest tire to run on stock rims with no issues at all. You can run 31s on stock rims with no issues unless stuffing.

How much lift does it take to clear a 33s Jeep XJ?

Registered. CT99XJ runs 33s on 3in of lift and he has a very capable rig. You will need to trim a lot and also add the correct bump stops. But if you want to do minimal trimming 4.5 in will work nice.
