Levoit air purifier with true hepa filter

Levoit : Air Purifiers

An air purifier can be a great addition to your space as it helps create clean air for you to breathe. At Target, you’ll find a wide range of air purifiers to choose from. Choosing the one that suits your space the best can be a daunting task. Here’s a quick guide that’ll make your job easy. The square footage of your room will help you choose the right air purifier for your space. The clean air delivery rate (CADR) will help you understand how effective a device is at filtering various particles in specific room sizes. Next is the type of purifier. Look for the ones that filter out pollutants and are based on home needs like removing allergens, cigarette smoke or pet dander. HEPA filters in combination with other filters like odor filters and chemical filters provide the required air quality for those who have allergies. Also, keep in mind the noise levels depending on where you’re going to use it. In addition, there are other features like programmable timer, remote control unit and other smart functions too. Whether you’re looking for an air purifier for a small space, large room or a whole house, browse through our store and find the right one for you.

I never truly believed that having an air purifier could improve the experience of being in my home—which, as someone who works from home, constitutes about 95 percent of my life. But when I was offered the opportunity to try Levoit’s Core 600S Smart True HEPA Air Purifier, I figured I might as well give it a go. After all, I was struggling with waking up bleary-eyed from allergies and with some persistent mystery smells that were starting to get old, quick. I’m so glad I did, as the Levoit has nearly eradicated both of those problems, quietly and with little to no effort from me.

Check out the pros, cons, and specs of the Levoit air purifier below, and read on for my full experience of testing this A+ smart air purifier.

Setup and Design:

For such a large device (standing nearly two-feet tall), I assumed setup would be somewhat cumbersome. I was wrong, and all that was necessary was unwrapping the filter, inserting it, and clicking the top half of the air purifier closed. It took maybe one minute, which absolutely ruled. From there it was ready to use, with manual top buttons. Every step of setup and all of the manual functions were clearly explained by the included literature. Setting up the app was also rather simple, but more on that later.

The straightforward design continues to the rest of the air purifier, with super intuitive buttons for power, a timer function, Night mode, Automatic mode, speed, and turning the minimal lights on and off. The screen in the middle of the ring of buttons provides a constant readout on air quality. You can use that to determine which speed you’d like to use *or* opt for the automatic setting, which will adjust speeds based on air quality. There’s also Night mode, which runs the air purifier at a low speed with a low noise level and no lights. It’s probably my favorite use of the Levoit, so more on that in a bit as well.

The Core 600S looks like an air purifier—there’s just no way around that. Although I would love nothing more than to keep it in a public area of the house, it’s bulky and difficult to find a spot for and I find myself putting it away when people come over. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a “cool” air purifier or one that could double as a piece of decor (even the portable ones are bulky), but this one definitely isn’t a fashion statement. That said, it could be worse. It’s at least neutral and streamlined. But aesthetics are definitely the biggest con when it comes to this air purifier.

Pro tip: Air purifiers need access to the air you're trying to refresh. Make sure nothing is blocking the air above or around it.

Effect on Smells and Allergens:

The Levoit Core 600S has proven to be effective when it comes to my two biggest air quality worries: eradicating smells and proactively removing allergens. If you’re looking for an air purifier that delivers in those areas, it’s a worthy splurge. Thanks, HEPA filter: the filter is actually a three-stage filtration system featuring a prefilter that grabs larger particles, a true HEPA filter that snags 99.97 percent of airborne particles (including viruses and mold), and an activated carbon filter that takes on smoke, smells, and fumes. The purifier can also cycle all the air in a 635-square foot room five times per hour—so efficient!

I’m gonna be real with you. My dishwasher has been producing some really rank smells lately. We’ve tried everything short of getting a new dishwasher (yes, I know there’s a secret filter in the bottom of every dishwasher, and that’s not it), and it’s a work in progress. But for now: stink. The first time I flipped the Levoit on to see if it would get rid of the smell, I was pleased as punch. Probably within 30 to 45 minutes, the smell was gone, and my nose truly rejoiced. The purifier also works well on less stinky but still prone to linger smells, like bacon. In fact, when we accidentally burned some bacon the other day and it began to smoke, the purifier’s readout let us know the air quality was poor. We turned it on high, and soon enough the quality was back where it should be, and the smell of burned bacon was no more.

As for allergies, in my late 20s I started having allergy issues. Between growing older, odd seasonal weather, and living in a house with seemingly endless dust, I suddenly find myself with itchy, puffy eyes some mornings. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s also not fun. Running the air purifier in my room overnight has definitely helped, and while it hasn’t taken away the issue altogether, it’s provided some relief. The purifier’s Night mode is amazing, and I swear it’s quieter than the humidifier I use in the winter…and when have you ever heard about a humidifier being too loud? Even placed maybe six feet from my head, the Levoit is barely audible. I’m pretty sensitive to light when I sleep, so I also appreciate that Night mode turns off every light on the machine. There’s not even a teeny tiny “on” light. It’s perfect. Long live Night mode.

Smart Features:

I’ll start by saying that the Levoit Core 600S does not require you to use the app to get great use out of it. The app does add some functionality—namely scheduling—but as someone who is not really into smart-home products, I was just as happy with the air purifier before downloading the app as I was after.

I’m not a very techy person, and I was able to easily connect to the air purifier’s app. I found it by using the QR code included in the setup instructions and followed the instructions in the app from there to connect to my air purifier. The app is pretty intuitive, and the biggest downside is having to make an account, but if you’re into controlling things from your phone or scheduling, it’ll be worth it.

From the app you can perform all the same functions you can using the purifier’s manual buttons, just remotely. Not necessary, but fun if you like feeling like you’re living in 2122. The most advanced feature, and one you can’t get manually, is creating a schedule for the air purifier. If you’d like it to run while you’re out, while you’re asleep, etc., it’s a feature worth having, and being able to set one-time or weekly run times is pretty darn cool. The app also tells you how effective your filter is and when you need to change it, which I know I will be grateful for when the time comes. Who among us has ever remembered to change a filter without a robot reminding us? From the app you can also connect to smart devices like Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control. I don’t have either of those but was asked if I would like to connect to one when I was setting up the app, so it should be a fairly simple addition to the process.

Is True HEPA better than HEPA?

A True HEPA filtration device or filter is the only type of HEPA filter that truly conforms to the DOE standard for HEPA filtration, has the highest efficiency, and hits the 99.97% threshold. If the HEPA filter does not meet the DOE's standards for HEPA filtration, then it is not considered True HEPA.

Does Levoit use HEPA filters?

True HEPA filter: This filter picks up allergens like pollen, smoke particles, and dust. Unlike many competitors, Levoit uses true HEPA filters in each product.

Is Levoit air purifier any good?

The Levoit Core 400S places highly in our unbiased ratings and is a good choice for those who need to clean the air in a room of 403 square feet or less. It uses a nylon pre-filter, an H13 True HEPA filter, and an activated carbon filter. These filters are expected to last between six and 12 months.

How long does a Levoit HEPA filter last?

To do its best work, the Levoit Air Purifier recommends changing the filter every 6-months, after it's been accumulating odors, particles, allergens, mold spores, etc. Package Contents1 x Fine Preliminary1 x True HEPA/Activated Carbon Filter.
