A refrigerator that no longer dispenses ice and water can leave your glass empty but your mind full of questions. Why is my LG refrigerator not dispensing water or ice? A water filter issue could be restricting water flow to the dispenser. Use these tips to diagnose an LG refrigerator water and ice dispenser not working and fill your glass once more.

LG Refrigerator Not Dispensing Water or Ice? This Could Be Why.

While water filter and supply issues could require a simple adjustment, part malfunctions could call for a professional repair. Troubleshoot an LG refrigerator not dispensing water or ice with these common causes.

Dispenser Lock Is On

The Dispenser Lock feature locks all dispenser functions to prevent accidental use. If this feature was inadvertently enabled, your LG refrigerator won’t dispense water or ice. When Dispenser Lock is engaged, the LOCK button on the dispenser panel will illuminate.

To turn off the Dispenser Lock feature, press and hold the LOCK button for 3-5 seconds. The light on the LOCK button should turn off, indicating that the dispenser is unlocked.

Clogged Refrigerator Water Filter

Water filter complications can restrict the flow of water to the dispenser, limiting or ceasing ice and water production.

The following water filter issues can result in an LG refrigerator not dispensing water or ice:

  • Filter due for a change: Over time, the refrigerator’s water filter can become clogged with the contaminants it screens out. When this happens, water flow to the dispenser will be restricted. It’s recommended that you change an LG refrigerator water filter every 6 months to prevent clogs.
  • Filter not installed properly: Incorrect installation of the filter can lead to a leaky refrigerator and limited water flow to the dispenser. Refer to your user manual to review the installation instructions for your refrigerator’s water filter.
  • Wrong filter installed: If a non-OEM filter was installed, it may not fit or function properly, decreasing water flow to the dispenser. Aftermarket water filters are also a common cause of leaking issues that can lead to water damage. Always replace the original filter with an OEM brand so it fits and operates correctly.

To avoid water damage from potential leaks, we always recommend installing a water alarm to warn you when a leak is detected. Contact Cody’s today for more information or to purchase a water alarm for your refrigerator.

Refrigerator Water Supply Issue

Water supply issues are often responsible for an LG refrigerator water dispenser not working properly. Your refrigerator dispenser needs a consistent and adequate supply of water to dispense water and ice.

These complications could affect your dispenser’s water supply:

  • Kinked or frozen water line: The refrigerator’s water line transports water from your home supply to the dispenser. If the line is kinked or frozen, the flow of water won’t be able to reach the dispenser. Kinks can be gently straightened to restore the flow of water, while aiming a hairdryer at the water line can melt ice blockages. However, if the water line is damaged, it must be replaced.
  • Low water pressure: If your home’s water pressure is too low it can prevent the refrigerator’s water inlet valve from opening and closing properly. If the valve doesn’t open sufficiently, the dispenser’s water flow may be weak or ice maker problems can limit ice production. Make sure your home’s water pressure is between 40-120 psi for the dispenser to function properly.
  • Defective water inlet valve: A defective water inlet valve may not open sufficiently or remain closed, restricting water flow to the dispenser. In this case, it requires professional replacement.
  • Reverse osmosis system: If your refrigerator is connected to a reverse osmosis (RO) system, water pressure may drop arbitrarily leading to a dispenser malfunction. This issue can also lead to leaks in some cases, which is why refrigerator manufacturers do not recommend connecting their models to RO systems.

Broken Door Switch

To prevent leaks, the refrigerator door switch turns off the dispenser when the door is open. When the switch malfunctions, the dispenser may remain off even if the door is closed. If the switch shows no continuity with multimeter testing, it requires replacement.

Dispenser Switch Not Working

When you push your glass against the dispenser’s lever it, in turn, activates the dispenser switch. The switch then sends voltage to the water inlet valve so it can open, allowing water to flow to the dispenser. If the switch is faulty, it won’t send the necessary voltage that opens the valve and the dispenser won’t be supplied with water.

If the LG water dispenser switch shows no continuity with multimeter testing, it should be replaced by a professional refrigerator repair service.

Don’t let an LG refrigerator not dispensing water or ice keep you from enjoying cold drinks at the touch of a button. Call Cody’s Appliance Repair to schedule your service today!
