Southern Live OaksQuercus Virginiana, more commonly known as the Live Oak is a magnificent tree with a wide spreading canopy providing large shady areas and is a majestic sight for any landscape. Most commonly found on the lower Coastal Plain in the southeastern United States, the tree can grow up to an average of 50 feet in height and can have trunks ranging from 3 to 6 feet in diameter. If properly established and maintained, a Live Oak can live for hundreds of years. A field grown tree can only be uprooted and transplanted in certain times of the year when the tree is dormant. A container grown tree can be planted year round because you do not have to cut the root system. We Transport ThemWe use an 18 wheeler to transport your tree safely to the location of your choice. To ensure the safety of your tree we unload your tree using machinery such as excavators and forklifts. Delivery is free of charge inside of Lafayette Parish, LA. We can also deliver to Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Florida for an extra fee depending on your location. We Plant ThemWe have different augers of all sizes that are operated by excavators to properly install any size tree we sell. To install smaller trees we use a Bobcat. Prices for installation vary depending on the size tree you purchase. Tree CareThere are many important factors involved in tree survival. Here are some guidelines to follow when caring for your tree after it has been installed. If properly cared for, your tree will be a part of your landscape for many years to come. FertilizingSix weeks after the planting of your tree, give it a second application of root stimulator (18 oz. per 5 gallons of water). Six weeks following the root stimulator application, apply 1 lb. of osmocote for each inch of diameter inside the brim. In March of the following year, repeat the osmocote application. What is the largest live oak you can buy?Southern Pride Tree Farm sells mature live oak trees ranging from from 2.5" caliper to 14" caliper (caliper is diameter of the trunk) or from 10' tall to 35' tall. The big Live oak trees we sell are all field grown (FG) trees meeting the highest standards for the strongest most healthy trees for our customers.
What is the best time of year to plant an oak tree?The best time to plant an oak tree is between mid-fall and early spring. Oak trees grow best when planted during a drier time of year, as opposed to rainy. When planted properly during the correct time of year – oak trees can successfully live hundreds of years.
Where do Live Oaks grow best?As their scientific name (Quercus virginiana) suggests, southern live oaks are found in Virginia, and continue south to Florida and west to Texas and Oklahoma. Southern live oaks grow well in salty soils and in shade, which makes them great competitors against other, less tolerant trees.
