2008 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2011

A very fine Cabernet, fancy and elegant in the mouth, although the tannins are tough and the wine wants some time. Your first impression is of astringency, a combination both of grape skin and oak tannins. Next, the blockbuster core of blackberries and black currants hits, leading to a long, spicy finish. Despite high alcohol, this seems like a wine that should develop over the next ten years.

Die Amerikaner melden sich auf dem Schweizer Weinmarkt zurück. Endlich! Die Lancierung des "CSR06" von Robert Mondavi wurde für die Presse als Ereignis zelebriert, bei dem der Master of Wine (US) Mark de Vere auch seine Wine-&-Food-Philosophie vorstellte. Eine ebenso eindrückliche Sache wie der Wein selbst, ein mächtiges, unglaublich gut gemachtes und zweifellos langlebiges Gewächs mit einer Aromenpalette, die von Cassis über Blutorange und Feige bis zu Schokolade, Leder und Mokka reicht.

2005 Vintage Tasted: Jul 2010

This is a very fine, high level Cabernet that shows the impeccable nature of Mondavi Reserve. Yet it's also very tannic and far from being drinkable. Shows a vast repository of black currant, blackberry, black cherry and new oak flavors wrapped into a smooth, velvety mouthfeel whose finish goes on forever. Masculine and authoritative, it should continue to improve for many years. Drink now, with decanting, and through 2017, at least.

2007 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2010

Bone dry and utterly balanced, with deeply powerful, long-lasting flavors of blackberries and black currants and an intense, but integrated, coating of smoky oak. But it's also very tannic. Nothing soft about this wine. As fine a cellar candidate as any Mondavi Reserve in years. Should develop for 12, 15, even 20 years.

2004 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2008

One of the ripest, highest alcohol Mondavi Reserve Cabs in memory, this wine is forward in cassis and cherry flavors, and while the tannins are pretty sturdy, it's sweet and soft enough to drink now. It definitely has the rich mouthfeel you want in a pricey Napa Cab. But it's young; cellar this one until at least 2010.

2002 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2006

Mainly from To Kalon grapes, this dark, young wine is not showing its best now. It hasn't pulled the oak, alcohol, acids, tannins and fruit together into a seamless package. The individual parts stick out, nakedly, yet possess an innate balance. Mondavi Reserves age well; this one should start to open by 2010 and hold for years after.

1999 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2005

To Kalon. Young. Cigar ash nose, blackberries, oak. A big, firm, assertive wine, fairly tannic. Scads of juicy cherries and blackberries. Very fine, lots of character and elegance. Drinks well now with rich fare through 2020.

1978 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2005

Unknown % of To Kalon; the winemaker thinks “a big chunk, maybe most.” Still good color, getting a pretty bouquet of old cabernet. Delicate, inviting, refined, not at all morbid. Very dry, lots of week cassis. Soft, distinguished, still lots of life ahead. Sweet vanilla, butter. Old claret. Now-2010.

2001 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2005

ContainsTo Kalon Vineyard fruit. Still a baby. Closed, brooding, very deep, very dry. Fabulous cassis fruit, a huge wine. Lots of delicious, sweet new oak. Superbly balanced, impressive. Drinkable now, but best 2010–2020.

1986 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2005

To Kalon. Gorgeously fresh bouquet. Blackcurrants, oak, cocoa, buttery caramel and char. Drinking really young, firm, fresh. Very dry, balanced, not a powerful wine but elegant, harmonious. Light and pretty. Now-2012.

1991 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2005

To Kalon. Showing good varietal character. Fresh, attractive. One of Genevieve Janssen's favorites. To me, on the first pour it was unyielding, tight, closed. After lots of time in the glass, became more forthcoming. Needs lots of decanting. Now-2016.

1999 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2004

Kräftiges Rubingranat, kräftiger Kern, zarte Randaufhellung, in der Nase feines Cassiskonfit, zarte Dörrfruchtaromen, enorm druckvoll, Fruchtsüße, dahinter massive Tannine, die aber guten Schliff haben, Cassis pur im Finish, zart pfeffrig im Finish, enorm attraktiv. Ein Bombenwein mit viel Perspektive. Wahrscheinlich der beste Wein der Degustation.

1991 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2004

Mittleres Karmingranat, breite Randaufhellung, in der Nase reif, nach Zwetschkenröster, am Gaumen etwas weitmaschig, zeigt aber eine angenehme Süße, zarter Gewürznachhall, bleibt ganz gut hängen. Wirkt bereits recht reif. Diese Runde geht jahrgangsbedingt in jedem Fall an Kalifornien.

1993 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2004

Mittleres Karmingranat, breite Randaufhellung, in der Nase balsamisch, wieder individuell im Bukett, Erdbeerkonfit, strenge Tannine, Heidelbeeren, süß und attraktiv, saftiges Cassis, tolle Tanninstruktur, anhaltend, hat Klasse. Runde an Mondavi.

1995 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2004

Kräftiges Rubingranat, violette Randaufhellung, in der Nase geröstete An­klänge, insgesamt verhalten, zartes Cassis, am Gaumen süß und dick, wirkt aber nicht ganz so geschliffen, eventuell etwas Restzucker im Spiel, Bitterschokonachhall.

1998 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2004

Kräftiges Rubingranat, violette Randaufhellung, in der Nase sehr attraktive Brombeer-Cassisnase, Gewürze, am Gaumen herrlicher Fruchtschmelz, suggestive Frucht, herrlich eingewobenes Tannin, jugendlich und bereits sehr trinkfreudig. Hat sich ganz entgegen seinen schlechten Ruf vom hässlichen Entlein zu einem stattlichen Schwan gemausert.

1997 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2004

Kräftiges Rubingranat, violette Randaufhellung, in der Nase etwas plumpe Süße nach Rhabarberkuchen, am Gaumen etwas strenge Tanninstellung, tendenziell trocken. Eleganter Speisenbegleiter.

1990 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2004

Leuchtendes Karmingranat, zarter Ockerrand, zart animalisch, etwas Goudron, röstig-rauchige Aromen, gewürzig, saftige süße Zwetschkenfrucht, präsente, stoffige Tannine, vermittelt eine süße Textur, rotbeerige Länge, etwas trocken im Abgang.
