The 1964 movie—as many already know—is about a reindeer who gets teased for his shiny red nose. After a whirlwind adventure, and with some help from new friends, he winds up saving Christmas. The short has been around for a good 54 years. But lately, there has been one burning question on many viewers' minds, best expressed by this Twitter user:

"Holiday movies with my kiddos inspire contemplation of a timeless seasonal mystery: Why *was* that doll on the Island of Misfit Toys?" they wrote.

Did they ever say what was wrong with the doll at the island of misfit toys?

— Bat Lippiello (@LimeTH) November 28, 2018

The scene in question comes into play when Rudolph and his buddies Hermey the Elf and Yukon Cornelius all travel to the Island of Misfit Toys. The area is full of trinkets that don't exactly make sense: a Jack-in-the-box named Charlie, a train with square wheels, and a boat that doesn't stay afloat, to name a few.

One of those items—"a dolly for Sue"—looks like any regular doll. She can even say, "How do you do?" So, why exactly did she end up being an oddball?

It turns out, the real reason has been hiding right underneath our noses. HuffPostnotes that Joe Hummel of the blog World of Pop Culturetook a deep dive into this mystery. In a post, he wrote that the doll was a "last-minute add-on" to the island, and her issue is "as plain as the nose on your face. More precisely, it’s the nose missing from her face."

There are a few darker theories, though. HuffPost adds that one of the show's producers, Arthur Rankin Jr., has said the doll has "psychiatric issues" due to "being abandoned by her owner."

Well, no matter what you choose to believe, you have an answer! Now we can all sit, back, relax, and watch Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in peace.
