Sudden weight gain after stopping birth control reddit

I am a 21 year old woman, 5'7" currently weighing 240 pounds. In October of this year I decided to start losing weight the right way, by counting calories, starting 5k program, and lifting weights 2-3 times a week. I was doing well and I lost 15 pounds in about 2 months.

However, since I've started losing weight, my menstrual cycle has been a little out of whack. It got to the point where it was interfering with my exercise. I visited my lady doctor and she said that it was a pretty normal thing, and to relieve some of my symptoms, she prescribed birth control.

I've been taking it for a little over a week now, and while I'm still living a healthy lifestyle, I've gained back 6 pounds of the weight I lost. I'm so incredibly frustrated. I don't want to stop taking it because it's helping relieve my menstrual symptoms so that I can exercise again, but it's the only thing that I can think that is making me gain weight.

Has anyone else experienced this? What do I do?

Sudden weight gain after stopping birth control reddit

I’m not asking for medical advice! I’m just crowd sourcing experiences ◡̈

I had my IUD removed and noticed my endurance/energy decreased. My workouts definitely seem harder and I feel completely drained.

I know there’s a bunch of things that could affect my energy levels (sleep, diet, depression, a million other things), most everything is the same and my doctor gave me a clean bill of health!

Has anyone experienced a change in their workouts after stopping hormonal birth control?

I’m in the same boat! Was on the pill for about 9 years and decided to come off it about 6 weeks ago. I’ve put on about 4kg in those six weeks and have been exercising the same (already exercise 5-6 times per week) and haven’t changed my diet. Going off, I had hoped my weight would actually lower (as I have struggled to lose weight all my life) but I didn’t expect to gain. Would absolutely love any answers!! Seems to me like there isn’t enough research into women’s health and if they can’t blame it on thyroid or PCOS, docs don’t think there is any explanation.

I experienced this! Not a lot but 5 lbs which is a lot for me as I struggle gaining weight. Im about 2 months off it now. I haven’t weighed myself in like two weeks but I think it’s starting to slow down.

I just don’t get it. I work out. Eat pretty healthy and have been thin my whole life. Once I started taking the pill 9 or so months ago I have gone from a bra size C to a DD. I have stretch marks now. Cellulite. My back and arms are fat. Went from 150 to 170. I officially hate my body. I want to get off a birth control and go back to my old body but people on Reddit keep saying “birth control doesn’t cause weight gain you just eat too much” i probably eat LESS then I did before birth control and I’m fatter.

Following because I'm asking myself the same questions. I'm coming on five years on my Mirena and planning to get it removed soon. I'm on the heavier end of a healthy weight, which I'm fine with, but I work hard to keep myself here. I worry that removing Mirena will make things harder.

I have to say though, prior to the Mirena, I was always thin, my only PCOS symptoms were irregular periods. I was on the pill from 17, then got Mirena at 20, and I gained 30 lbs over the first two years on Mirena and started developing more acne, hair loss and hirsutism. I've been maintaining that extra weight ever since, unable to get any lower. So, alternatively, I'm wondering if Mirena is what's making it more difficult for me to lose weight? Will getting my Mirena removed help with my PCOS symptoms?

Is weight gain common after stopping birth control?

How long does it take for hormones to balance after stopping birth control?

Most people can expect their bodies to return to normal within just a few days after stopping birth control. However, it can take up to 3 months before your normal menstrual cycle returns while your hormone levels adjust and menstruation occurs on a regular cycle.

How long does it take for weight gain from birth control to go away?

It's often a temporary side effect that's due to fluid retention, not extra fat. A review of 44 studies showed no evidence that birth control pills caused weight gain in most women. And, as with other possible side effects of the pill, any weight gain is generally minimal and goes away within 2 to 3 months.
