Delete that message you just sent and forget all about it

This article explains how to permanently unsend a message you've sent using Facebook Messenger. You can remove the message from your own chat history or for everyone on the chat.

How to Unsend Facebook Messages in a Web Browser

Here's how to unsend a Messenger message in a web browser:

  1. Select More (three dots), and then select Remove.

  2. Select Unsend for everyone to remove the comment from the conversation, and then select Remove.

  3. Click Okay to confirm.

  4. The text you sent is gone. In its place, a bubble says, "You unsent a message." This bubble is visible to all participants.

How to Unsend Messages in the Facebook Messenger App

Whether you have an Android or an iPhone, the process for unsending a message sent from the app is the same.

  1. Tap and hold the message you want to unsend.

  2. Select More.

  3. Tap Unsend.

  4. Choose Unsend for Everyone to remove the message from all chat participants' threads. Alternatively, tap Unsend for You to remove it from your chat but leave it on other participants' threads.

  5. Select OK to confirm.

  6. The item you unsent has "You unsent a message" in its place. Everyone in the conversation can see this.

The unsend feature might not be available if you use a messaging app that integrates with Facebook other than Facebook Messenger.

Why Would You Want to Unsend Facebook Messages?

Let's say you just sent a message you instantly regretted, or you accidentally sent a personal message to the wrong person. Until 2018, Facebook messages could not be unsent or removed from the recipient's inbox. Now, you can take back your words, GIFs, emojis, or anything else you sent to an individual or group of people.

Can People Still See Unsent Facebook Messages?

Unsending a message deletes it from the conversation, so it might disappear before the recipient actually sees it. However, it's very possible they've already viewed the message, especially if it was sent some time previously. The recipient will see that you've unsent a message.

As part of its mission to prevent cyberbullying, Facebook administrators can see unsent messages for a short time in case a message is reported for policy violations. When someone unsends a message, the message is replaced by text indicating the message was removed. That way, you can report users for harassment by tapping the sender's name, then selecting Something's Wrong in the Facebook Messenger app.

Facebook users can permanently take back messages they didn't mean to send from Messenger conversations, but there are limitations to the feature.

Facebook Messenger

Every Facebook user has probably had to go through the horror of unintentionally sending a message to a Messenger contact that was meant for somebody else, making it a good thing that the company allows the option to take back errant chats and eliminate them from the view of one or all parties involved in a conversation. Rather than have to completely disable Facebook Messenger out of embarrassment, users can save face online, with a few acceptable caveats.

The 'Unsend' option is available to use through Facebook's Messenger tab within the main platform via the desktop app. It can also be accessed through messenger.com as well as Messenger's mobile apps on iOS and Android. When a message in a Facebook chat thread is unsent, a notification declaring that a person unsent a message will replace the deleted chat bubble. People included in the conversation will still see these now-absent messages recorded in the chat history, but will be unable to read the original message unless they happened to read it before the deletion. This is different from Facebook Messenger’s vanish mode, which allows users to communicate without messages being archived in the chat history while the feature is active.

According to TechCrunch, the ability to unsend messages has been available since 2018, but back then users only had ten minutes after a message gets delivered to take it back; after that, it became permanently recorded. Now, users can either permanently 'Unsend for Everyone' and remove messages from everyone's view, or just hide messages they no longer want to see themselves by selecting 'Unsend for You.' To do this on a desktop web browser, go to facebook.com, click on the Messenger icon on the top-right corner of the page, and select a conversation. Alternatively,  go directly to messenger.com and open a conversation thread. Click the three-dot icon next to the message bubble to delete and select 'Unsend.' Choose between 'Unsend for everyone' or 'Unsend for you.' Once a choice has been made, click on 'Unsend.'

Users can also fire up the Messenger app on their mobile phones and open a chat thread they want to delete messages from. Find the text bubble to remove, long-press on it until options pop up. Android users can tap 'Unsend' and choose between 'Unsend for everyone' or 'Unsend for you.' iPhone owners need to hit 'More' before choosing 'Unsend,' then 'Unsend for everyone' or 'Unsend for you.'

For some Facebook users, ignorance can be absolute bliss. Rather than have to block someone on Messenger, people can utilize the 'Unsend for you' option and forget they ever sent a message to someone without necessarily taking the statement back and the other Facebook user's ability to still see the message. Do note that even though Facebook Messenger is essentially secure, deleted chats can still be included in reports when a user or someone in the chat downloads a copy of their Facebook data. It'll say messages were unsent in the chat though, and not what the messages originally said. Additionally, it's also possible that other Facebook users may have already seen or forwarded a message before it got deleted.

What does message unsent mean on Messenger?

(Pocket-lint) - Facebook Messenger has an "unsend" feature for all users. The feature lets you delete messages from a conversation after you've sent them - similar to what WhatsApp also allows you to do within a certain timeframe, though the WhatsApp feature offers longer.

How do I retrieve an unsent message on Messenger?

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to retrieve the message on Facebook itself. Once it's been unsent, it'll be permanently removed unless the person sends it again.

What happens when a message is unsent?

If you unsend a message, it will disappear from the recipient's screen, but they'll be notified that you unsent it. Now that you know how it works, here's how to unsend a message: While in an iMessage conversation, tap and hold the message you want to unsend. Tap Undo Send.
