2015 jeep wrangler hot oil light

  • #1

I was doing some very light snow wheeling this weekend and I got a 'Hot oil' warning light. I was just driving down a snowy trail and the only things of interest that happened before hand were a bit deeper snow so T/C was working hard for a maybe a couple minutes and it was rather bumpy and things got knocked around a bit. I wasn't doing anything serious and was in 4hi.

This issue affects 2007-2011 JKs with automatic transmissions. "Hot Oil" refers to the trans oil demand by the time that indicator lights up and the chime goes off the trans is REALLY hot! If let unheeded the trans oil will boil out of the fill tube and pour onto the passenger side exhaust manifold. The resulting fire will quickly burn through the exposed fuel line, which is right behind the exhaust crossover pipe. Fuel under high pressure will then spray onto the hot exhaust, just adding to the conflagration. This series of brilliant engineering faux pax / stupidity comes to us courtesy Chrysler bean counter engineering, who not only conceived of the series of mistakes, have managed to dodge several Federal investigations. The sum total of recalls resulted in the hot oil light and removal of a skid plate, which had nothing to do with the underlying defect.

The fix is to install an auxiliary transmission cooler sooner rather than later. Any quality cooler kit will get the job done. Many online threads on installing one, actually pretty simple. I initially ran a Hayden cooler (B&M style) mounted to some home made brackets. I later replaced it with Mopar's auxiliary cooler kit as I needed to recover some real estate for a power steering cooler. Get one installed, no more worries. Chrysler has been criminally negligent on this issue, thankfully no one has been killed in these fires..yet.

Wheeling up here in wind rock I got the HOTOIL message in the dash with all the bells. Turned the Jeep off and now it won’t turn back on. I get all the dash lights, the hot oil message is still there but never turns over. Anyone heard of this happening before??

Disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes, then try. You have checked the oil, right?

Happened to ours a couple weeks ago being in 4HI, 'HOT OIL' light was flashing. We shut it off, put it in 4LO and all was good. I was told that that particular indicator is for trans fluid, sure enough we had a stored code for 'Trans overtemp.' So make sure your fluid is full also. As far as it not starting, not sure about that one.

Checked the oil, even put in a new battery thinking it was dead.

Do you have any procal or scan tool to check for codes? Sounds like maybe it went limp mode after it happened. And any major water crossings before this happened?

Nope no water. And we have a scan tool and there are some codes but most of them are related to when we disconnected the ECM thinking it needed to be reset. There’s only one code we can’t find the meaning of and it’s

U11c2 - Implausible/Missing Transmission

Have you cleared all codes and tried to start? Check to make sure all cables/connectors on the trans are good.

Towing it back to the cabin now. Will check cables on transmission when we get back. Thanks for that!

Me too. We are a long way from home lol. Worst case there is a Jeep dealer in town we’ll tow it to tomorrow morning. Thankfully one guy trailered his Jeep here with his 4x4 truck and was able to come get me out on the trail

Fucking fixed it! Wire loom that sits at the front of the jeep on the frame got pinched by my drag link when I caught a little air coming off a hill, managed to cut 2 wires.

Bout to solder up the wire and get back out on the trails!

Wow. Props on finding it so quickly. That's a rare one for the books. Glad you found the problem.

One of the guys out with us is a former F16 avionics guy. He’s like, cars are easy lol. He found it right away once he got under the jeep.
