Beautyrest Black Hybrid Mattresses: Shared Features

There are four models in the Beautyrest Black Hybrid collection of mattresses. With cooling and support features similar to the Black line, the Black Hybrid line is distinguished by including more memory foam in the comfort layers, imparting more of that slow-responding memory feel compared to the rest of the Beautyrest Black beds.

There's also a non-Black Beautyrest Hybrid collection, which are less expensive, and also have more memory foam than other Beautyrest collections, but these lack the T3 twisted coils found in the Black and Black Hybrid mattresses.

It's also worth noting how Beautyrest defines "hybrid." GoodBed uses the term "Hybrid Mattress" to indicate any bed that has springs for support along with foam comfort materials on top. Those comfort materials could be regular polyurethane foam, or latex, or memory foam, or any combination, in any quantity.

Beautyrest, however, uses the term 'hybrid' more narrowly. While almost all of Beautyrest's mattresses, from the entry-level Beautyrest collection, to the Black, Platinum and Silver collections, use pocketed coils along with some degree of comfort foams, the mattresses in the Hybrid and Black Hybrid series use the most memory foams, both in the variety of foams, and in the quantity used. They have a high degree of that slow, melting-into-the-bed sensation we associate with memory foam. All of the Hybrid and Black Hybrid collection mattresses are traditional tight-cover style beds (as opposed to pillow top models). with stretchy covers that can mold around the memory foam when it's compressed.

Beautyrest uses an "X" in the model numbers to denote 'hybrid' so you'll see these models sold as the "Beautyrest Black Hybrid X-Class Medium" and so on.

Be aware that Mattress Firm has its own line of Black Hybrid mattresses; these are store exclusives made in partnership with Beautyrest. They are different and quite a bit more expensive than the regular Beautyrest Black Hybrid mattresses discussed here, which you can find in many mattress stores.

T3 Pocketed Coils

Beautyrest is using their signature triple-wire coils in the Black and Black Hybrid collections. Three wires are twisted into a cable, which is then twisted into the coil. In the mattresses, Beautyrest alternates rows of the T3 coils with regular pocketed coils. The regular coils vary in gauge to help give a bed its firmness or softness. But all of the mattresses in the Black and Black Hybrid series employ the alternating coil system.

BlackIce Hybrid Cooling Features

The Beautyrest Black and Black Hybrid mattresses also feature a suite of cooling features that the company collectively calls 'BlackIce."

In the regular Black mattresses, it's called "BlackIce 4.0" and called BlackIce Hybrid" in the hybrid versions.

For BlackIce Hybrid, there's phase change material on the top of the cover. Simply put, phase change material is similar to wax beads; the beads feel cool to the touch, and as your body warms them, they melt and lose their benefit. These materials are meant to keep you cooler while you fall asleep.

The second major component is Beautyrest's RightTemp memory foam that's infused with graphite, a proven conductor of heat. All of the Black Hybrid models have it near the top of the bed.

Depending on the model, you'll also find Beautyrest Gel Memory Foam and the company's AirCool memory foam, which has ventilation holes pierced through it.

Beautyrest Black Hybrid X-Class Models

There are 4 total models in the Black Hybrid series, which differ by feel/comfort, mattress height, and of course price. All have a very similar look.

The firmness of the coils and the amount of memory foam in these beds creates differences in their feel.

X-Class Medium

The Beautyrest Black Hybrid X-Class Medium is the least expensive in the collection, and it features 3" of memory foam: a layer of RightTemp foam and a 2" layer of gel memory foam.

We found this mattress to be a "medium" on our softness scale as well, with a blend of feeling hugged/cradled and floating on top, with just slightly deeper than average cushioning depth (how much you sink into the bed).

With this mattress, as with all of the Black Hybrid models, there's definitely some deep bounce when you plop your whole weight on the bed, activating the spring support unit. However, there's very little of what we'd call surface bounce because the memory foam on top absorbed motion.

There's plenty of that slow, melting memory foam feeling in this mattress.

X-Class Plush

Next up in price, we would call the Plush version in the Beautyrest Black Hybrid collection a "medium soft" on our scale. It's definitely softer than the medium, and you sink in more, not surprising since there's an extra inch of graphite memory foam in this model, for a total of 4".

It still has some deep bounce, but no surface or mid-level bounce to speak of.

X-Class Firm

Moving on up in price, the Black Hybrid Firm is slightly taller than the Medium and Plush, and we'd call it a "firm" on our scale too.

This bed has 2.5" of memory foam, plus another inch of polyurethane foam and a 1.5" layer of synthetic latex, a material only use on the two most expensive models in the series.

While you don't sink as much into the Firm version, we did feel there was good pressure relief, especially for heavier (200 lbs.+) side sleepers, and although this is a firmer mattress, you still experience that slow responding memory feel.

X-Class Ultra Plush

The tallest (at 15") and most expensive of the four Black Hybrid mattresses, the Ultra Plush has 4" in memory foam plus another 1.5" of latex. On our softness scale, we would call it a "soft" -- this is definitely a deeply cushioned mattress with a lot of slow memory feel.

You can see below how much our tester is sinking into the bed. If you like to sink deeply into your bed, and also like that melting-into-the-bed feeling you get from classic memory foam, this mattress has it.
